Absolutely lovely! How's the front shifting? Thought the MTB and road front derailleurs have different pull ratios?

No issues at all. The front shifts great through the gears. I've heard that before, but I've used some mountain bike shifters with road derailleurs too, and not had any issues. I think there is a major difference between road and mountain with either 9 or 10 speed, making them incompatible.

I did this conversion in 2015 and am still enjoying it for road, gravel, and single-track. It has done commuter duty with street tires and front & rear racks similar to the excellent GT posted above, but nowadays it's a gravel & mountain bike, mostly.

Those conversions are great ! I decided to put 700c wheels on my Trimble carbon frame. I used a Paul Component Moto brake on the rear wheel, as this brake could adjust to the larger size wheel. On the front I have a carbon 700c fork, with cantilever brakes. Right now I have 35mm Pasela tires on it, but can run knobbies or narrow road tires. Salsa Delgado rims, XTR hubs.

Almost done! It's in a rideable state finally. Need a 26.8 seatpost (probably, not sure yet, 26.4 falls in, it's coke can shimmed right now and tightened like a mofo), proper saddle, bar tape needs to arrive and I'll swap the brifters with actual brake levers once I get them.

What stem is that? I just switched the bars to drops on my GT and the reach with my stock 100(?)mm stem is just crazy. Need something like that.

Cheers! It's made by Kalloy UNO, I don't know the exact model as my lbs ordered it for me. It is about 80 mm long and fits to a 1" fork.

I really like that bike. It’s a retro version of an adventure bike. Or should I say modern adventure bikes are copies of vintage MTBs.

Those are MKS Sylvan Touring pedals and an On-One Midge bar.
No personal experience, but I've read that the Soma Portola bar is close to the Midge bar, if you can't find a Midge but want the same general shape.

Also, some biopace 'rings on this thing would really pull it together. Unfortunately this generation STX doesn't use the normal changing configuration, so I'll have to keep my eye out for a new crank.

Thanks! I really wanted to build up a 650b Soma Wolverine, but I'm also trying to buy a house so this will have to hold me over...I think it probably cost about 5 to 10% of what the soma would.

I picked up a Trek 950 frame earlier in the summer, and built it with the parts I had on an old Schwinn Clear Creek mountain bike. Mostly Deore LX and XT stuff I've picked up over the years. I rode it with Nitto Bullmoose bars all summer, but recently switched to a set of Nitto Noodles. This thing fits and rides great. I'm also loving the new Maxxis DTH tires. I planned for it to be mainly a back up and winter commuter, but I like it so much that I'm riding it everyday.

I relate on this 950.
I picked up the same 1989 model in a 22" in same color. Is yours a 22" or 23"?
However paint was rough on it so I had it powdercoated.
Also I like the ride a lot and have been choosing it to ride often lately.
I did go with upright bars on mine.
I have those Maxxis DTH on another bike and think they ride nicely. The 950 sports Rat Traps I have had 2 years or so moving from bike to bike.
Enjoy.

Somewhat off-topic question, but where do you lads get all these bar-end shifters? I'm located in Hungary, in the last 3-4 years I've been looking for used bike parts ads in several Facebook groups and other marketplaces, and never have I ever seen a person selling them. The ones I can get new are 9 speed only, which aren't compatible with my 7 speed Shimano system.
So the question is: Where can I get a set of 3x7/8 speed Shimano-compatible bar end shifters in Europe with international shipping?

Use 7 speed in friction mode only on 9 speed shifters. It's quite easy on modern equipment or get 9 a speed cassete with the same bottom and low gears as your current setup.
