No G or Froomey at World Championships

This news is disappointing. If you win a grand tour during the year, the least you could do is line up for the hilliest World Championship course in recent years.

I would really like a World Tour that sees all riders riding all throughout the season. Popping in and out for certain races is not as entertaining as a fan.

End rant.

I agree that it's a shame that Froome and Thomas won't be competing in the Worlds, but your comment assumes incorrectly that it's possible for elite riders to maintain top fitness throughout the year. Uh uh.

FWIW: "Tour de France winner Thomas and Giro d’Italia champion Froome, who finished third in France, have been ruled out of selection by mutual agreement with British Cycling given that hey will not be at peak fitness for the Worlds"

No, I get it. I just wish it wasn't as such. I love the riders that ride year round. Bardet was there, covered in mud at Strada Bianca, racing at this years tour, and will ride the World Championships. Sure, he might not be on best form, but he's there. Nibali, winning Milan San Remo, fighting at the tour until knocked out of contention, and now will ride the World Championships.

I do also understand the nature of the World Championships and that Britain will choose who they think will ride the best, and that countries like France and Italy might not have the option of sitting out Bardet and Nibali.

Limbo

With Sky Network UK, reportedly , being sold to Comcast,
maybe the sponsorship deal, funding the Pro Bike Racing team is in doubt.

I'm pretty sure that it's not entirely the country's choice. eg., if AG2R and Bahrain-Merida didn't want Bardet and Nibali to be racing just now, then those guys wouldn't be there.

Really? I thought national teams select the riders? Ben King was 'selected' for the US nationals team after his stellar performance in the Vuelta. Trade teams only ride together in the TTT. I didn't think that a trade team could veto a rider wanting to participate with their national team in the World Championships..

No sponsor would stop their rider competing at the Worlds Road Race. They'd maybe have issues with them riding track for their country (Cavendish and Viviani both had issues with their trade teams around Rio, and you pretty much never see World Tour road pros competing at the Track Worlds any more, where the pursuit at least used to feature some of the prologue specialists), but every sponsor wants to have the rainbow jersey in their colours the following year. The men's RR stands up alongside the 5 Monuments, and they are the biggest one-day prizes in the sport, which brings me to;

The only vague similarity with the All Stars is that riders are, for the day, teammates of riders they would normally compete against. The Worlds is as important as the World Series. A rainbow jersey is as big a deal as getting MVP in the Superbowl. Nobody on the startline tomorrow shares your view. That's why, with a few notable exceptions, the list of winners is a decent chart of all-time greats of the sport.
