Stripped RD hanger bolt - screw extractor?
Second time that this is happening. Last time I cut a groove with a dremel. Was thinking of using a screw extractor. Any idea what size I would need? I think the bolts that came on this bike are crap. I did not over tighten, and yet managed to strip both.
Any links say from Amazon for a decent one?

Search for "screw extractor for (your screw size) screw" and you'll find one. Alternatively you can get a whole set for 10-15 bucks.

The ones I see are with the smallest for 3mm screws. Dont have my bike with me now, and needed to order this now. Do you think that the 3mm extractor would do? Those bolts are pretty tiny. Bottle cage ones are 5mm, and thee are much smaller in diameter.

If the hole in the frame/hanger is a thru hole then if the bolt is soft enough you might be able to use a smaller bit and have it cut into the bolt and take hold. When that happens the drill will simply thread the bolt all the way through the frame. It will be hard to find an extractor small enough. If there is enough to cut a slot into for a screw driver then that may be your best bet this time as well. For replacement - get high quality fasteners. Stainless. Ti tend to be too hard and near impossible to remove later by drill if need be.

I don't know what size screws you have but hard to imagine it's smaller than an M3m which is roughly 0.12" diameter.

Derailleur hangers are almost universally 10mm x 1mm. Are you perhaps referring to the adjust bolt on a horizontal dropout (3mm x 0.5mm)?

I sense a trend. is this the 3rd of these to pop up on the forums in the past few months? the last guy, knew a guy at a machine shop that drilled it out & re-tapped the hole, I think. I forget what the 1st guy did. personally, I'm a fan of left hand drill bits & straight fluted extractors w a proper tap wrench. but I've never worked on anything that small in diameter ...

The idea of drilling or dremeling near a carbon fiber dropout was giving me the chills.

Thanks guys.
Lots of tips. On a cycling trip right now. Have ordered an extractor. Will still give it a shot with the dremel first, and then use good quality bolts.

Thanks. Titanium frame. They should have provided better bolts. Any idea where I can get these in good quality stainless steel?

What are the specs for the screw: thread diameter, pitch, length, head style, drive type? I may have something you can use or can definitely tell you where to get it.

M3 is all you need. You are going to have to cut the hangar screw to the exact length you need. One local source would be an RC aircraft store. They have small bags of high quality hardware that would be perfect. Don't go high strength, since this is a sacrificial bolt to protect the RD. You want this to shear rather than something else. Great pics up the thread!

No.
No.
No.
Agreed, but irrelevant for an M3 screw.

So, got a set of Stanley's screw extractors. Reverse drill at low speed and the bolt was out in 2 seconds.

Is that your first time at McMaster?! Impressive isn't it? I was shown a catalog from them for the first time about 20 years ago. I think it took 3 years just to get my jaw off the floor.
