Raleigh Record
Hey folks, thinking about grabbing this Raleigh as a project bike. Seems to need a lot of work. It does have downtube shifters which would wake it a 1974. Worth the trouble?

Well, I do think that old low-end bikes can make nice riders with good wheels. I did that with a Capri (another low end Raleigh) as well as with my French bikes. But whether it is worth it to you, I can’t say.
i will note that when I decide an old cheap bike is not for me (which includes the Capri I mentioned) I usually strip the bike of my parts and donate the frame to Bike Works, the local bike charity, for rebuilding and donation to deserving kids.
Here is the Capri as I built it up.

No, its not worth the trouble. Refurbishing an old bike takes the same amount of time, and the same $$ in consumables, whether it is something good, or basic (actually, bikes with cottered cranks tend to take MORE time). Unless you have unlimited time, aim higher.
You will be upside down $$ when you are done.
My first project was a very similar bike. When I was done, I had a beautiful crappy bike. Lesson learned.

Even if the bike is free, you might want to look elsewhere. I have no problem with entry level bikes but, like wrk101 (thrifty bill), I would not advise spending much, if anything, on the Raleigh Record. Why..?
It is entry level, sports steel wheel rims, rotted tires, and anything but "user friendly" components (my opinion). Were I the OP, I would take the well offered advice and look elsewhere for a better starting point.
This is How To Find A Vintage Bicycle and, if quality concerns are to be addressed, then Vintage Bicycle Quality might prove useful when hunting for a bike.
