Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mount Monadnock in NH

Anyone ever ride up Mount Monadnock in Southern NH? Thinking about making the ride this weekend, and I am curious about others' experiences. I hear the road is pretty rough . . .

you can't ride a bike up Monadnock. there's no auto road. besides, no wheeled vehicles on park trails. sure you're not thinking about Pack Monadnock?

Danny MacAskill could ride up Monadnock.

Well, except of course, if it were the white dot trail on a busy weekend.

Thoreau and Emerson did the Pumpelly on a tandem, but no one has done it since.

Well, there should be a road up Monadnock . . .

So I did the Pack on Sunday instead, and it kicked my **s. First time I have had to stop on a hill since I got the new bike 350 miles ago, and I had to stop more times than I am willing to admit here. That 20% grade to finish really sucks! Still, felt pretty good to do 1,600 in 1.3 miles, and the view was awesome. I was really surprised by how hard the ride down was -- pretty fast, but the road turns so often you cannot really let go, plus it has more than a few small frost heaves. Between holding on to the brakes the whole way and the rough road, my arms were screaming.

I get dizzy on that last stretch of the road where if you're looking up, you're looking up at the sky.
It's a great ride, especially if you climb 101 to the park entrance as a warm up.
I haven't done it this year, does anyone know if it still cost $5 to ride your bike up?

old thread? so what? Wifey & I hiked up Pack Monadnock last Sunday. when we got to the top a guy on a bike had just arrived. then a Ranger said: "OK 10 more times to beat the record" apparently someone has done this 10 times in one day? the guy took a phone pic of the lookout tower & I was about to offer to take a pic of him with it, but then he asked the Ranger for water & he walked off

pretty dam impressive bike climb!

Pack and the roads leading up to it are great fun, that last stretch is brutal. Going down can be sketchy though if you’re not careful, I’ve heard of a few guys who blew out their carbon rims on the descent. When I went up the ranger asked how many times I was going to do it and I said I’d be happy with just once. Apparently it’s a popular hill to train for the race up Mt Washington.
