This 1991 820 has really reminded me that a great-riding frame doesn't need to be high-end.

Hi all! This thread inspired me to build my first drop bar MTB and now that it's finished its probably the bike that i use the most. I'll post pictures whan I get over the 10 post threshold. Thanks to everyone here for the inspiration!

Best Regards
/ Tobias

Those 1.75 paselas just sorta work on these all-rounder kind of MTB conversions, don't they? I've used those on all mine....except the last one, where I fell into a deal on 1.75 folding Panaracer T-Servs. Can't really tell much of a difference though; maybe a little lighter, but that's about it.

T-Servs are lighter than wire-bead Paselas thanks to the folding bead, and they have a higher-tier tread compound. I'd be surprised if they rolled as well as non-PT Paselas do, though. Panaracer's beefy protection layers can be pretty slow.

I guess, with the surfaces I ride on, and hauling the amount of commuting gear I normally carry (and how weak I am generally as a rider), I can't really tell any difference. Aesthetically speaking, I sorta miss the gum walls...the T-Serv only came in black I think. Here's my mb2 parked at work...I think I like the look of the blackwalls a little less.

I have a 94 GT Karakoram with dirt drops as well! It is my most consistently ridden steed. What front rack are you running? Was it easy to set up?

91 Schwinn High Plains
This one is getting another round of work done. A dirt drop stem in silver and a SR wide handlebar. Shimano Exage brake levers with flashy yellow/black tape to liven it all up. Saddle is still a Brooks but now a wayward Colt model.

more pics when it happens. Love this ride!

Gathering the bits. Bar tape was found deep in the LBS junk draw.... gratis! The 2 Black round spacers on the box also came from a junk draw...same. They will hold the yellow cage off of the Suntour FD clamp band. Nice silver DD stem with handlebar in place. Will cable tomorrow hopefully.

Normally, I am not a fan of splash tape, but in this case I think it is perfect.

Gratis helps me generate the love for it. Padding for my hands is another plus.
When I first built it up as a drop bar, I used yellow cotton. That I really liked!

Coming along... next is figuring out which brake levers. I’m leaning to aero since the stem has the hanger built in on the underside instead of thru the top... routing would be easier it seems.

For aero I would look at the new Cane Creek ones. I would have used them on this HP rebuild but got all that I have on other bikes. Very comfy and great to hold on to when torquing the bike.

Here’s my Marin Bear Valley SE drop conversion. It has the frame from the next higher bike, triple butted Tange.

Barcons, tektro levers with (lower?) leverage to pull the V brakes, with a shorter/taller stem.

The steering feels sluggish, and I just don’t take it out very often. Had it on Craigslist and got one low ******.

Can I ask what brake levers/hoods those are?

Those are Cane Creek SCR5's in black, generously shared with me for this build by @malcala622. The other hoods I normally use are the Tektro RL340's --but the older I get the more I prefer the shape of the Cane Creeks. They seem a little more like the Campy shape. They're the one with the little lizards on.
