Get a beater bike for riding the trails, keep your brand new m4 specialized one for parking lot posing. There is a lot of experience in this forum regarding the latter.

You rang?

Clear number plate backing is available through your local moto shop. 10-12 bucks will get you enough to wrap your bike completely should you feel the need.

i have a "mudflap" which blocks a lot of the rocks. It doesn't block as much as my Avenir front fender did, but the Avenir broke off when I cased a small jump. the mudflap won't break off. you could try just 1 big piece of the clear scotch shipping tape. I put that on my chainstay and it has been working fine. or try an old tube held on with some zip ties

M3 make a good clear tapethat you can buy in sheets, it is about .5mm thick. They also make a more durable one which is supposedly designed to be put on Helicopter rotors (I have no idea if this ais actually true) to stop the rotor getting chipped in trees (obviously for things like battle choppers). I use this on my bike. You should be able to find simialr stuff advertised as invisible car bra's.

I also have an old tube with Electrical tape arounf the chainstay to stop chain slap.

+1 on the protective tape. Another source would be a ski shop where they use it to protect ski tops.

Yes - frame it up and never ride it on trails.

Seriously, if you're going to be worried about dings on your bike from flying rocks, you really shouldn't go mtb'ing.

Don't worry about it. The harder you work to prevent it the more bummed you're going to be when you see chips on your bike.

Or you could not wash the bike, get a nice protective layer of dirt going on it . Then when you do get a ding in it, let the dirt build back up and no one will ever know.

the best thing about a new bike is that it's new.
the worst thing about a new bike is that it's new. i always look forward to that first major ding/scratch/scuff that will allow me to enjoy the ride without worrying anymore about the frame's appearance.

Paint chips and scratches are like scars for your bike. Just appreciate them and make sure you have a story for how you got them all. Or use a few layers of duct tape...
