I love seeing tan wall tires back in vogue. When I got back into cycling about 10 years ago, tanwalls were dead, passé. I was bummed when the old Panaracers on my bike got damaged and all I could find locally were all black or black with bright colored stripes. Paselas were in the "well, we could order those for you" catalog. Now I'm surrounded by Paselas, Compasses, Somas. I feel vindicated in my tastes.

I like the 'tan-wall' tires, whether solely for good looks or a return to vintage tradition. By the way in the picture with Yates, is that an honest to gosh podium girl? That's another tradition I've always kind of enjoyed, I guess these days, at the risk of being regarded as something kind of awful. I'd heard, and a quick web search seems to confirm it, that podium girls are history, a tradition not to be continued with the Tour de France.

More than the outfits and bikes, this year's Giro is old-fashioned racing! Yates the last two weeks and Froome on Zoncolan is racing from an old playbook, I love it!

I even will see classic-profile drop bars a la Cinelli 64 / Giro d'Italia (no less), albeit with a modern 31.8mm clamp diameter, and in black. Interesting to see. Tan walls look great against all-black carbon wheels, too. The climbs have been pretty brutal, but I really enjoy seeing the GC contenders battling it out at the front instead of being towed up by teams all the time. I don't know how all of this will play out in the TdF, but Yates will be around to give people a run for their money. Hoping Sagan joins again, and hopefully doesn't get DQ'd for a non-reason (but you know, that's the French....).

I would try skinwalls or tanwalls again if the sides would hold up better. The last time I tried Specialized Armadillos, the sidewalls cracked open before the tread wore out. I don't recall this being as big a problem in the early 1970s. The UV component of sunlight is stronger now because of the ozone layer depletion, but I wonder what else is involved.

Different chemistry of whatever tire sidewalls are made of? Just guessing, but I imagine tire recipes change over time; materials and process. Tires seem relatively cheap nowadays compared to olden times.

Good catch. When I saw the low mounted seat stays, I was thinking Tarmac. I have an old Allez which I love riding. When I saw the welds I knew it was aluminum, just blew it on the model. Haven't checked out the Specialized catalog in awhile. Not the first time I've been wrong.

They were glass back in the day. You still can get glass, but I think it may be a special order. All of mine are prescription glass.

^^Wasn't the fact that sunglasses were made of glass the reason so few racers wore them (fear of getting broken glass in the eye)? And Hinault was sort of thumbing it in the face of tradition by wearing shades?
