I feel everything now
I have my legs and lungs back but being older now I feel everything vice I have if I eat junk food I feel it the next day and especially beer. Even only 2-3 beers is enough to give me a headache and slows me down. I know I’m getting back the conditioning I lost because I feel everything. If I eat well and stay away from beer and junk food I feel great. More than ever now good nutrition and adequate rest is key. The working out for me is the easy part I’m religious to the training aspects but I need to learn discipline with everything else.

Some people's bodies never complain, but mine does constantly. It's amazing how much what you did yesterday affect how good you feel today. But not everyone makes the connection, or really pays attention to how they feel minute by minute, but cycling rehularly forces you to. I deal with a lot of fatigue, and some days I sleep 12-16 hours, but I figure my body needs it, and as long as everything keeps working, I ask no questions.

There are some health and fitness enthusiasts who tell people to "listen to their body". The older it gets, the louder my body speaks to me; just like any body that is losing its hearing.
As far as beer, I'm lucky if I get through a single can before hitting my "beer wall" these days.

Don't feel alone. I think one of the keys is to realize and then try to attain the fitness level that fits your age, body and recovery times. I know there is no way that I'm going to be as fit as I was when I was 30, 40 or 50, but I try to come as close as I can to maximizing my fitness level for my age and ability. I feel it when I push myself. Some days after a rather intense workout I may never get off the couch for the rest of the day. But I do notice that in my off days I do have more energy.

cold O'Doul's NA beer following my 101 miles yesterday = no problems
Wife had a cold O'Doul's for me at the finish line of my Mickey Marathon at Disney World in January. Was a real delight after the 6:31 it took to walk it.

I wonder if the starches present in beer (left over from the mash.. where the calories come from) are dinking with your blood sugar?
When was the last time you had labs drawn, and what was your glucose level?

Went out with an old friend last Sunday and had at least 10 pints of Bud in a nice 4 hour stretch at the bar. Had a crab cake app and big bowl of pasta along with the beer.
Was home by 9:00 so felt ok Monday morning. A little sluggish until lunchtime but who cares.
Been hitting the bike at the gym at least three days a week.

In my military days, when I occasionally hit the bars with the guys, I learned that Michelob would give me a headache, but virtually no other brands did. Rather than analyze it, I just stayed away from Mic.

Oh, to make this more bike related ---
Back 40+ years ago when I was a college lad at Ohio State, yes, I imbibed... (what a shocker, eh?)
BUT, the next morning at sun-up, I pulled my bike out from under my bed in the dorm, put the wheels on, and rode 40-50 miles before my roomies even got up. I burned all of the nasty toxins from my bloodstream, whereas my roomies woke up with headaches/hung-over. Cycling - the best alcohol burner.

I rode my bike around Lakewood Ohio from 73-75 as a youngster then back to Texas took me a few years of culture shock in my home state. I want to visit the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. Maybe this summer.

Great topic - The older I get, the more I need to manage stress and rest. Sleep is most beneficial, but sometimes hard to get. I really love a good beer or two - but never more than two. Anymore than that & the quality of my sleep in impaired, and I really feel it the next day. I tend to go for really 'good' (IMHO) beer (Guinness, a quality IPA, or Belgium Ale) & those don't seem to cause any headaches, etc.

Man, I love a couple nice strong IPAs, especially after a good long, hard ride. I mean, big flavorful double IPAs. But at 58 I just don't process it like I used to. If I have beer early enough in the day that it "wears off" by evening, well before bed, and eat hearty, then I'm usually OK the next day but even then I still feel it! 2 strong beers like that is my limit for sure, and wine I can barely drink without feeling like a mummy the next morning. And the hard stuff is almost totally out. I'll have a martini a couple times a year at best now.
As for rest, I'm grudgingly realizing I need more recovery time more often than I used to. I usually ride every other day now, but when I do miss several days in a row, I can actually feel stronger on the next ride (even though mentally I start going bonkers when I don't ride!).
