Joined the 2019 Century Club
Rode in the Land Run 100 gravel race on Saturday and completed the 103 mile course for my first century of the season. This is the earliest in the year I've ever joined the century club.
My total elapsed time for the ride was 8:40 and good for 17th out of 40 in the 60+ category. I actually averaged 13 mph on some very rough gravel that featured over 6,000 feet of climbing.
Unfortunately someone had a heart attack on the course and passed. I've ridden two gravel events in two weeks and someone passed on both rides.
I wonder if because of the longer and colder than normal winter people haven't trained as much and are over doing it.

Nice job! I bet you had to do some significant inclement weather training for that one.
I've got a century with a significant gravel component coming up in a couple of weeks that I ride every year. It's always hard to get in shape for it due to the difficulty of getting outside when the weather is bad. This year I've managed to get in a lot of miles so I'm feeling good about it, though I have been caught out in some rain and hail. At those times I try to remember Rule #9 *.
*" Rule #9 : If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period". Velominati ? The Rules

Alright! That’s a great effort! 13 mph with 6000’ of climbing over 103 miles is terrific. Well done!
How in the heck do you get that much climbing out your way???

Congratulations! Depending on the gravel, I usually find there is a multiplier for perceived effort per mile on gravel vs. pavement. Around where I am, it's about a 1.75 multiplier - so 100 miles on gravel feels like 175 mi on pavement. Well beyond my range.
Last weekend I did a grave ride with a racing buddy (also over 50, but still competitive). Only 63 miles long, but with 6K feet climbing. I was good at 1st, but at his pace I totally cracked at 40 miles. The last 23 miles were torture - especially considering there were two mountain climbs remaining. For the 1st time in my life I actually was worried about having a heart attack - I was acutely aware of having overdone it. For those who train with power, my Training Stress Score (TSS) for the day was a whopping 332 (normal range for a good day is 100-150). I was beyond fatigued - no doubt my heart was too. I see how someone could have issues out on event if similarly overdoing it.

Congrats, well done. I'm trying to work myself up to a full century but I'll need more physical therapy on my old neck and shoulder injuries first. I rode two 50-milers this past weekend and felt pretty good.
Regarding the deaths during cycling (other than caused by injuries), I wouldn't dwell on worries about how and why it happened. One of my local cycling friends, a very popular fellow, died unexpectedly a couple of months ago. Dropped dead of a heart attack walking in the parking lot of a hardware store. He was fit for being in his late 50s, didn't seem to be at risk, but may have had health risk factors that he didn't discuss with other folks.
I suspect that some of us ride despite the risks, not to prolong our lives but to enhance our enjoyment of the time we have, here and now.
