Do you have photos of this bike without the watermark? My bike was just stolen and it was this make and model. Also do you know what year it is from? Thank you!

Why do you want a photo that is not water marked?

1x10 Club?

I had a nice early `90s Rockhopper that I wanted to convert into a cargo bike.

Here's the first iteration, with the stock drivetrain:

And here's a shot of the final 1x10 full cargo bike conversion:

I used this bike for Farmer's Market and grocery runs for a season, and then traded it for a Ross Aristocrat. Dumb choice, I know...

My 92 Stumpy, you can find a build thread in the classic and vintage forums. Love at first ride.

Cleaned up and ridden like this for the summer

As is waiting for new decals and rebuild.

Here's a crappy picture of my 1988 Rockhopper Comp.

I bought it new back in my bike shop days. It's had non-stock wheels since day one - as I remember it we pulled one of the stock wheels off for a warranty claim and then built up these for it instead? Deore XT hubs and Araya rims. The other non-stock parts were added a few years ago when I decided to convert it over to a street bike.

It's a little small for me, I bought it when I thought I'd be doing a lot more off road stuff and wanted a smaller frame than my then current MTB, I think that one was a Peugeot Canyon Express? Anyway... I recently spent way too much money converting a "Schwinn" Sanctuary 7 cruiser over to a Sturmey 5 speed hub, plus a few other upgrades so I don't need another bike for the paved trails around here. I also discovered there are "off road" trails around here too, but this has slicks on it now. The final straw was when I noticed how rusty the (original) shifter cables are. Can't have that, this deserves better treatment!

I'll be replacing the stem, bars, tires, and cables but other than that just cleaning and rebuilding where needed. All the parts showed up yesterday and I've got next week off work so we'll see how fast this happens!

85 Rockhopper

Hi All,

I have an '85 rockhopper frame I'm going to build. Does anyone know what size headset I need?
What about seatpost... I have a 26.6 ordered but I think I may have ordered the wrong size.

Thanks!

I have a chrome headset from that era IIRC. It came off a team Stumpjumper that replaced w/ a blk Deore headset. Like new! PM if interested...

A Rockhopper I recently restored...

I forgot I posted that here. It's changed a little since then:

I'm not a big fan of the blackwall tires, but the price was right! It's all ready to try out some of the trails around here come springtime.

I am amazed ant how cheap some of the rockhoppers are in thrift stores in the US.

If I sold mine for market value or it got stolen I couldn't replace it with anything close to its quality without spending a lot.

Tough to find any quality vintage 80s-90s Specialized mtbs in my area. They’re either rusty and overpriced or well-kept and overpriced. A decent Rockhopper in a retro paint scheme would complete my Specialized trio (Stumpjumper/Rockhopper/Hardrock).

Finally found a vintage 1989 Rockhopper Comp and, 2-fer(!) came with a Stumpjumper Team. Both sun-faded to hell but solid and sound. And best of all dirt cheap. Keeping it fairly stock, no 1x or drop bar conversions this time. Going to be busy for a while getting that paint shiny again. Stuck seatposts will the most challenging part, especially as my shoulder is still rehabbing from a wreck 6 weeks ago.

Are you sure that's not an '88 Rockhopper Comp? Looks just like mine, except for stuff I've changed.

I've owned it since new, it's been rebuilt/modified a couple times now.

The big difference between this '88 and the '89 is that the '89 has rear cantilever brakes instead of a chainstay U-brake.

Yes that rear brake moving from chainstay to seatstay was the big change from 88 to 89. Here’s my 89 Comp in the process of rehab. Same paint job.

This ancient thread caused me to buy an ancient Rockhopper today. Back when they kept the rear U-brake on the Down Low.

Thanks, you bad influence people.

Here’s my add to this thread. I took this down to the frame. I wet sanded it to a polish and cleaned up every part. Most of it is stock with a few exceptions like consumables. New brake calipers, new stem, a handlebar off a 1999 Hardrock, and obviously new rack, basket, and basket bag.

That purple fade is simply divine. Best color scheme I've seen on the old bikes. Great job with the wet sanding and polish.
