49/45 crankset

I have a 52/45 Stronglight 93 but unfortunately 4 or 5 teeth of the 52 met the asphalt at some point in their life and shortened them anywhere from 20 to 50% of their original height. It seemed to work fine but I dont really feel good about having a damaged chainring like that.

I have a 49T outer chainring to put on but I'm wondering if anyone has run a similar combo of 49/45 chainrings and how they felt about it. Seems like a three fifth step crankset instead of the half step.

A 49 outer is quite nice, as long as top speed is not an issue. I like it. Combines nicely with a 14-28 FW. But with a smaller inner, like a 36, such as on this bike:

There's a 37T available for the Stronglight 93. I'd get that.

I've been running 48/40 with 14-24 for the last year or so and really like it. I'm able to use big ring/small cog combinations more often and I have more options in the midrange too. I don't find myself spun out on a descent often enough to mind the reduced top end.

Looking at the gear calculators is fun. You will then have a better idea.

They work rather nicely.

With a 13-28 7 speed it gives a nice half-step from 105 to 48 GI.

I have a 3x10 with a 49x46x34 and it works well as a half step +.with a 11x36 cassette.

here it shows as a 50 but is now a 49 and looks similar

I had to trim the inner side of the FD to fit over the 46, modern 3 speed Front derailleurs are too thick in height.

I have also used a 48x45 with a 2x9 12-36 cassette on my Zunow

Absolutely positively yes!

I have run 50-47 / 14-16-18-20-23 -- near-perfect half-step for flat rides. I swapped in a 42 for a nice 1.5-step for hill work. It works even better with a 6-speed 14-16-18-20-23-26, which is what I currently have on the Bianchi.

I am strongly considering 49-45 / 14-17-20-24-28 for the "mostly original" Sieger, which is keeping its original Agrati cottered steel crankset and Simplex 3-to-6 bolt 3-piece adapter, which has a lower limit of 45T. If I can't get the Campag. Gran Sport to clear 28T, I am inclined to go 49-46 / 14-16-18-20-23-26 if the GS will handle 6 speeds, or maybe 49-45 / 14-17-20-24-26, since I don't do large-large crosschaining anyway.

The Peugeot has 45-42 / 13-15-17-20-23-26.

The Capo Modell Campagnolo has 46-38 / 13-15-17-19-22-25, which makes a nice 1.5-step with about the same 96-inch top gear as 50/14.

49-45 will shift fast and sure. Play with the calculater and then go to IRD and make up a FW.
