I love how your design in pantographing enhances the lines of the piece and doesn't change them. Absolutely beautiful work and vision.

Quite a fast feed rate- esp without coolant!

I am not a big Panto guy but do have a bike that does have a Panto ring that could/ should be replicated. There was never a seat post done but I did come up with what would be appropriate- there were shift levers and brake levers done... the full Monty would be fun - in spades. Wink, wink, nudge nudge

So on something like a seatpost or stem quill you get a varying depth in the cut especially on a small diameter curved 'tube'. I remember the engraver used flat master patterns (usually brass) in his old fully-mechanical pantograph and on a piece with tight (or compound) curves there sometimes was significant distortion. Enough so that customers occasionally complained and wanted refunds or "damages" payment. He just shrugged it off.
I was wondering about that.
sjn1892 - Does your CNC set up take the curved surface into account, or is it all done 2D?

Yes my cnc takes the curved surface into account. Plus I have a 4th axis I use now and them for more tricky parts where I need the rotation.

Just FYI, he hasn’t been active since May 2020, almost a year. He did some lovely panto work for me last Spring for my Richard Sachs.

Those look gorgeous, great work. Interesting, in my other hobby a pantograph is the device connecting a trolley to the live wire so you had me confused

Doesn't the availability of relatively affordable home laser etching equipment might offer a sort of back up to actual machining pantographic work and opens it up to the amateur "pantographers" out there, as it will be easier to translate graphic files to pantographs? I see mostly ones with low energy lasers sold out there, but I did notice a few that supposedly, can etching metal surfaces.
Laser etching can never replace real pantographing as we know on bicycle components (Especially the special skills and talent that needs to go with it), but it might be an alternative that people can consider, if it does work.

My apologies for my absence on the forum and particularly this post. I do try to keep on top of all messages that come to me but considering how many platforms or social media sites I'm contactable through it can get tricky, especially with how busy the panto has become too. I'll do my best to keep on top of it.

In the meantime here's a few more photos of some of my more recent work.

Gios panto and fluting on outer ring created from a Nuovo Record chainring

Record cranks with some nasty corrosion in need of restoration

Restored Record cranks

Dura Ace cranks restored and new engraved logos

Gimondi panto and drillium levers

A bit of drillium here too

No problem Stephen. I have found you via Instagram
Obviously polishing removes the original anodising that was put there by the manufacturer to protect the alloy. How do you propose that we protect the parts post-polishing & pantographing? i.e. to prevent tarnishing?

The high polish of some Delta brakes that I bought on eBay did not last very long.

Hi Treve
Unfortunately at the moment there is only re-polishing in my opinion. I have heard that there are some companies that offer a 'clear anodise' which would be ideal if its true but I've not seen any examples yet. This was something I was looking into before Covid arrived which obviously put an abrupt halt to it.
I have some polished components on my bikes so I just give them a re-polish with Mothers Alumionium Polish from time to time which keeps a good shine and removes the hairline marks that appear from time to time. I appreciate if you use the bike often this could be a pain so the clear anodise could be the solution.
regards

Thanks Stephen. Delta brakes are notorious for picking up marks made by stuff thrown up by the back tyre. There's some kind of clear coat used by guitar makers. I wonder if that works?
(I'll continue to message you via Instagram regarding my actual panto request)

sjn1892 I've thought about reaching out several times to inquire about a stem for my Coppi frameset, but now, post-Brexit, seeing how much it's impacted my coffee pod supplier on import/export (plus he just lost a bunch of inventory in a warehouse fire!) I'm not sure if commissioning a piece makes any sense.

Anyway, just wanted to comment again: Gorgeous work.

Thanks Francophile, yes its such a shame that Brexit happened, disaster for both of us really and it seems to have enhanced custom's focus on ALL international import/export duties too so not good at all.
I am working on trying to get a special licence that will allow me to import goods that I can work on and then export them again to return them to customers without adding all of the customs and taxes, apparently this is possible but may take some time to get.
The only other way at the moment is to declare the value as less than £39 as this does not then have tax added.

As soon as I am able to get the licence I will post it on my various sites with all of the details.
Best regards

Stunning work! I have a Stronglight 93 cranks set that was not anodized, like all of them. Mothers every once in a great while keeps it shinny. I spend more time trying to keep the chain clean than polishing.

Steve, I really am impressed with the polish work on the Campy RD! You must have fully disassembled it.

The Colnago rings look like they were media blasted to get that sand cast look(?).

Hi Djhdjh
Thank you I'm glad you like my work. It may be best to have a chat on another site, perhaps, Facebook Messenger or Instagram if you have either?
My instagram name is @pantoparts,
Facebook is https://www.facebook.com/groups/109516439574320/about/
and I also have a Flickr page here too https://www.flickr.com/photos/pantoparts/

If you'd rather continue to communicate on here that is fine too, especially if youre not a social media user.
Best regards
