Maybe I've always been in the deep end but I think nothing of putting things you love with other things you love....do it your way. If you want that ultra-modern group on a 30-year-old steel frame, DO IT! That's a great price on that Ironman. I picked mine up for $140. Same bronze Shimano 600 group and was able to sell the group on the bay for more than I paid for the bike.

Yes, I'd take that '87, as is. I need to find a D-FW facilitator.

Hey PaintitCeleste, at least on this one less risk.
If that other 55 dollar Ironman were in Texas like this one is, I'd take a chance and get it. But definitely wouldn't powder coat. I think putting some very modern components on it would do it justice. Like this. I could just see me showing up with these parts on that old frame. I'm mean I'd put them on a Italian frame ,so why not an ironman. Someone's gone off the deep end. And I'm not one to point fingers but my thumbs will do. (IT'S ME).

RT, I would say you might have a problem....if I didn't have a frame awaiting shipment at someone's house in Cleveland (I'm in STL), which they picked up off of CL for me at my request...

No problem. I have one sitting in New Jersey.
The one in Dallas-Fort Worth is "in process," so to speak....

FYI, folks, a seller in Irving, Texas has let me know he has a 48cm Miami Vice frame + bits that he's interested in moving.

Just bought this gem on San Francisco C.L. Awaiting shipment from an LBS to me here in Oregon. LBS says the paint is immaculate! So excited to build up my first Ironman.

welcome attylah: yeah, pics on CL looked pretty good- particularly for around here where city bikes tend to take a beating. that one looked like someone had taken good care of it.

you are lucky I already have 2, because that was in my size and only 15 minutes away.

Congratulations. Nice Miami Vice frameset. Which way you leaning modern or stock?
If I were in your shoes I would be so anxious, like a puppy waiting for master to come home. Also I'd be envious but I already have one.

1986 Master?

@RobbieTunes

Were you looking for a 1986 in this color scheme and size?

It's on my CL and too small for me (I've been looking for a 60cm). I think it's all original except for the bars, but I haven't actually had a chance to look at it yet.

Thanks, but I've got an '86, and there was no Master model in 1986,
though it shares most of the the drivetrain with the 1987 Master.

There is a similar color scheme in '85 that I was looking for.
I'm on bike-hold right now....trying to cool down a bit.

I appreciate the heads-up, and perhaps I'll run across a 60cm, will let you know.

Sounds good.

I've actually got a line on a different bike now, so I was going to throw this one back in the pond unless there was an interest from someone else.

I have a 1987 Miyata Alumitech with full 105, but with fatal frame issue, so it will be the donor for the CIM. This includes a set of the '80's Dave Scott DH aero bars with bar end shifters. I'm thinking yellow bar wrap, yellow saddle.... Can't wait to show up with this machine at a local triathlon or two!

I appreciate your restraint jetboy, I've been looking for quite a while for this paint in this size. It took some effort to complete the transaction, but what a great seller, he really worked with me.

Got a google alert about this, actually forgot I HAD a google alert. 50 or 52cm Ironman, depending on what part of the ad you read, rare yellow/white paint, I forget what year that designates, looks clean, and $165. In San Diego. Good luck!

It is a 87 master.
I think this same bike was listed in the SF Bay area CL awhile back.
On post 730 vinnems posted his wrecked one so I pm'd him about this one I guess he never got it (if it's the same bike).
When I look back at those older post I'm always curious why some happy CIM owners never post again. Perhaps they're too busy riding. Or maybe they've met all their goals (Ironman wise) and have moved on. Me, l still have my 89 to get. And since I'm in no hurry (read no money) I'll be here a while. But I wonder when I get it will I be gone too?
It's weird but I can't remember so much (unless im really interested) when someone tells me something,or I hear it on TV, but when it's written I can recall most things. Luckily I don't read much. Because if I pick up a book I don't care if the world stops turning I won't put it down til I'm finished. So I've learned to limit my reading to magazine articles and these post. Last book I read was Bruce Springsteen biography.
RobbieTunes is the one person who has stayed on this thread from the beginning, (as we are all aware of). I'm really unfamiliar with this forum and don't know what tagged or subscribe is, but I do search CIM and have seen RT everywhere. When I'm on another thread I'll post if I have something to add and (like everyone else) think my opinion should be the last thing said about it.
BTW, the CL ad says you won't find a better bike for this price on CL, however RT did and for at least 5 bucks less. Same color scheme too. Winner winner. Sleepless ramble over.

Thanks to you, of course. Enabler, Facilitator, doesn't matter. The newer folks keep me going, the older ones try to stay awake....

For Japanese bikes with headtube pump pegs, I use the peg as a quick size range indicator. The yellow one above has no peg. Time for Robbie's knowledge. Did the 52's have a peg?

Only 54 cm and above came with pump pegs. More to the point, 52 does not. That is a 52 or 50. Hard to tell with that pic angle.
How come when I state something, no one believes me but @RobbieTunes says something everyone believes him. What? Is he he Superman or something? Oh wait, he ran a 5k in under 14 minutes, Never Mind.

It just means you have done your job Robbie. You spread the word and people listened.
Now my pump peg system is not reliable because it varies from brand to brand. The wife's 52 Team Miyata has a peg.
Here is a question that someone can answer for me. I know that Centurion sponsored some pro teams/riders. Did they ever have a bike with a number hanger on it?
