On Saturday we bought our cats new apartments. Nice two-room scratch towers with a roof terrace. One each, so you'd think ...

But no.

We could have saved some money here.

They do like warm places, so it makes sense that when it is colder they might snuggle together to help stay warm. Once the weather gets warmer (and indoor temperatures are warmer), they will probably each take one.

Suspect it was wise to get them identical; otherwise they would be like two small children who both want to play with the red ball...or the blue one.

The weird thing is, they each had their own tower where they would spend the night (see post # 1340). As those were getting pretty scruffy, we thought we'd be fair and replace both. Oh, well.

Yes, thank you - that was a fabulous photo.

Wonderful of you to have the camera close to hand in order to capture it!

That's very cute. It's good to be owned by a cat Going to have to post some pics of mine, she's a gray tortie with some orange in her fur, and loves to sleep on my lap.

I have reupholstered a cat tree. You only need some scrap carpet, a utility knife, a staple gun,and something to use as a cutting board is all you need.

Now there is a fine (and felinous) opportunity for a niche enterprise - "Let Us Reupholster Your Cat Trees!"

Here is our cat Arwen. We adopted her as a kitten in 2009; she is a tortie, and has some orange in her fur. She is a very sweet cat and likes sleeping on my lap too.

In some ways the hardest part is coming up with scrap carpet. People will sell it to you of course, but for a cat tree I really don't want to pay. I don't even care that much about the color, really. It helps to know someone . I still have a bag of scraps from the last time around that I can pull out again.

Something with a tight weave like a berber is ideally what you would look for.

Some cats like to scratch sisal instead. I haven't tried redoing that - I suspect that you would need to pound nails to secure that properly.

My wife tells me that when I retire I can make a few $$ on the side making these things and selling them. The basic ones like they have at the pet stores wouldn't interest me much, but if you get creative, you can make different types of things. There is a kitty condo that looks like a martini glass, for example - the people that make those get something like 700$/pc for those:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCKU...ature=youtu.be

Doesn't have to be this, of course - you can let your imagination run wild and pick anything you like.

Years ago I built a large-diameter scratching post by wrapping a 8" diameter cardboard tube (a concrete form) with sisal rope. I secured it at the top and bottom with staples, but the rest was held on with Elmer's glue. A top and a base held on with screws completed the post.

It looks a little ratty now, but I've had it for nearly 25 years and two sets of cats. I have more ideas... just need to find time between bike projects to get them done.

I took inspiration from Bob Walker's book The Cat's House: THECATSHOUSE.COM

The predictably-named Pumpkin. Last year's TDF in the background, for bikie-relatedness.

I joke with people that our children are lazy and unmotivated. They oftentimes respond that their human children (esp teenagers) are also lazy and unmotivated, but they will pay to send them to college, whereas we will not have that added burden.

Cats are not pets. They are mobile, self-cleaning (usually) house decorations.

Miss Kitty has been gone for 14 months now and I still miss her. She was the best. She was purring when she took her last breath
