"Jack Taylor" ca. ~1950 Path/Tourist/Clubman-style

Friend and BF member holiday76 sent this frame to me so I could build it up and ride it as it's on the small side for him. He purchased it from Norris Lockley who is convinced it is a Jack Taylor. The serial number doesn't make sense, but who knows. It is certainly from the 40s or 50s and we know that the lamp bracket and braze-ons were added at the same time the BB shell was replaced as holiday found a work order in the BB shell. Under the black paint you can see a pale yellowish green. It's a lightweight frame that is very responsive and quick to accelerate. But, I only have a few shakedown rides as of yet.

I built it up with parts that aren't period correct, but are either close or very much look like they'd have been upgrades early in its life. The saddle is RHM #14 with other bits from Stronglight and MAFAC. Most of the rest are modern with care taken to make them look correct.

Ha! No. I set the brake cables up to work at the minimum and maximum stem height and set it at the minimum for pics.

Pardon my ignorance -- what are the braze on tabs on the seat stays for?

I think it has fender or rack mounts real low on the stays but then is what looks like a cable guide up above the brake bridge.

I am curious about the tubing. Great looking bike though.

Outstanding, Justin! You're giving me inspiration to finish my JT build. How do you like those MAFAC levers with the plastic bodies? Do they feel any different than the alloy version?

The seat stays and fork blades both have fender mounts (flat tabs) and I think those are original. The drive side seat stay has a cable stop that corresponds to one on the top tube. Until someone comes up with a more plausible explanation, I choose to believe those were added for a hub gear.

Tarwheel, the tires are 700x32 Cypres.

Thanks! I think they may be a bit more comfortable riding on the hoods. Braking from the hoods seems to be about the same (read: poor) and I have what most would consider large hands. But overall, I'm happy with their performance. I've learned from previous Racer setups regarding straddle cable length and the Kool Stop Mathauser compound pads are a big part of that. No squeal and I can lock up the rear wheel.

Lookin' good. I particularly like the saddle, the color, and the handlebar mounted water bottle. If it were mine, I would probably be scrounging for a medium ratio 4-speed S-A hub.

The tubing sticker is a Jack Taylor Tourist (531db). It feels quite light and I think it probably is some form of 531. The seat tube is a little out of round at the clamp, but I am using a 26.4mm post and that's probably the original spec.

I appreciate it. Yeah, the 4-speed would be cool, but I like riding fixed so that would mean a second rear wheel. Maybe if one falls into my lap.

Justin, you were right. I am digging it. I think that if that had some red Bluemels fenders, it would make that bike nearly perfect. Does it have round fork tubes? I find a light mount on a round fork blade to be an interesting addition to the bike.
