My previous Garmins
Edge 200 was solid
Edge 500 was solid
Edge 510 was solid
Edge 800 was junk for about 6 months
Edge 810 was junk for about 2 years
Edge 520 was solid
Edge 1000 was junk for about a year
Edge 820 was junk for about a year
Today I am going to use my Varia Radar to see how it behaves with the 1030.

Today was a good day for the 1030. I factory reset it Sat night and today was the 1st ride since doing that.
Went 40 miles with no issues at all. Sensors all stayed connected, BT phone stayed connected and my Varia Radar worked as expected with no issues.
The ride uploaded after I ended it and all went well today.
The only minor issue I saw was the speed reading from the senor was erratic a few times. Not sure of that's an Edge issue or maybe my sensor needs a new battery.

Today was the final straw. Went on a 52 mile ride and had numerous issues.
1. Speed and cadence would not auto connect or stay paired once I manually paired them. Finally deleted them and just used GPS.
2. When using GPS for speed and distance I got several GPS signal lost notifications. It was sunny, clear and I was out in the open during all of these failures.
3. Had about 15 BT phone disconnects and reconnects.
4. During the 52 mile route, about 30 miles in, I went to the map page and the Edge 1030 froze and locked up. The only way to get it working was a hard power down. When I booted back up, the previous 30 mile were gone. Had to start a new ride.
5. Varia Radar stayed connected but the Edge failed to form the Light Network.
Bottom line, it's going back! I requested a return and already have the return shipping label. I'll factory reset it and mailbox back tomorrow.

I just had far to many issues for me to justify it's price. I went to my LBS about 30 minutes ago and picked up an Edge 520. I seriously considered the Bolt but it won't work with my Varia Radar.
I'll probably try the 1030 again at some point, maybe a year or so from now when it's out of Alpha testing stage.

Thanks for the posts and waiting sounds like good idea. Like they say about cars! Never buy the first year of a new model. Whether true or not it sounds good.

I'm a victim of my own stupidity. I always want the new Garmin toy full well knowing it's going to be in an Alpha state.
I did it with the 810, the 1000, the 820 and now with the 1030. Guess I'm always hopeful that Garmin will finally get it right.
It's on its way back today and I got the newly purchased 520 all updated and setup for today's ride.
Since I will no longer have the 1030, I'll bow out of this thread unless someone has specific questions for me.

Was at the garage sale at REI today, saw the 1030 in the glass case.
$700
Wondered how many folks are going to pay that to find out “this fuc*ing thing doesn’t work”

Got two 1030s, one for myself and the other for my wife.
Mine set up properly and seems to be working. My wife's will not connect at all. Have gone through various "forget iPhone" and "forget device" things. Have set up with Wifi on and off, have set up about six times on Garmin Connect and the mobile App.
It won't bring up the BTE file to establish the second connection.
I know that there is a computer engineer someone in the world who is laughing at me for not knowing the EXACT sequence in which I should set this up, the exact temperature and humidity levels and the exact time window in order to make all this work. But none of that is my job.
If Garmin does not fix this issue soon (it is on their Forum already) this product will be a gigantic bust. Most of us Beta Buyers bought this device for its Enhanced Connectivity Features. But if it won't connect, then that does seem to be a bit of an issue...

I had connection issues on an iPhone 6S when I recently set up a 1000, the non-smart BT connected fine, the BTE would not. Then I read somewhere to just try it a few more times, and sure enough, it eventually connected.
No clue if it's a Apple or Garmin issue.

Won't connect to what? AFAIK, one iPhone can pair to only one 1030. What are you trying to connect your wife's 1030 to, and is that device already connected to something? Bluetooth will only connect one pair of devices.

On the 1000, it first paired with basic BT, then prompted to do a Smart pair. It was unsuccessful the first few times, then worked. On the iPhone BT screen, it shows 2 pairings with the device
And to Tyre, don’t forget to try a phone power reboot.

Thanks, folks.
My Edge is paired to my iPhone. We are attempting to pair my wife's edge to her iPhone. We have been successful in this with previous Edge products (such as the 520).
I am aware of the two pairings that have to be done and have tried all sorts of magical Reboots, erasures and that sort of thing. But the simple fact is that if a bluetooth device in the year 2017 can not discover a current Apple product iPhone, there is a bug somewhere in something. Gone are the days when a manufacturer could sniff the air and say that their product does not work with Apple. And Edge specifically is designed to make sure that it does indeed work with iPhones. As such, if it doesn't pair, something is wrong.
Having me work around and tinker around and mess around until I hit Just The Right Combo is sort of like having a patient assist the surgeon in taking out the patient's appendix. Sure, that's impressive. But it seems to me that the surgeon should be able to do that without help from the patient.
Between the iPhone and the Edge I have over $1000 worth of current bluetube tech that don't connect.
That aint right.

Anyone had issues with their Garmin speed sensor not working when it's on the bike? Flashes green when I reset the battery but once it's on the bike, nothing.

Was looking at replacing my 510 with the 1000 but was put off with the relatively low battery life of the 1000. So I started to consider the 1030, even at its high price point. I guess I will wait till the end of this season. They may have the bugs worked out by then. Thanks for all the information here. A 1030 was in my cart and I read this right before I was about to submit my order.

As further thought, the 1000 can be purchased for $300, while a 1030 is still up around $600.

This is useful info. The 1000 would be fine for 90% of the time if it can last that long. I thought guys were only getting 7 hours max on full-time nav. That would suck on long rides. Could always tape a small USB battery pack on those days, and plug it in eventually. The 1030's better touch screen is tempting. I need to give this some thought.

The 1000 can get 12-14 hrs of life in non-navigation mode, 10 in full time nav. That's a day or two worth of riding only a bit less than an Elemnt, but less than the 1030. Note that the battery life of a 1030 goes down when navigating and would require the expensive add-on proprietary battery to get longer life. A 1000 and others can go days with a USB battery stick.

This may be the high end of what a 1000 is capable of, but I’ve read this of other users as well. Once you enable stuff like Di2 connection and navigate for a century, I can see where 7 hrs might be the norm.
I’ve also read where the 1030 battery goes quick with all the bells and whistles enabled and I’m not sure if you can run the 1030 on an external USB stick battery like you can a 1000.
Personally I would have stayed with a Wahoo device (my Edge 810 was trouble from the get go), I really liked the Bolt, just couldn’t read the TBT screen. As well I can (in theory) download and install the Topo version of OpenStreetMaps, which is more useful for gravel road exploring than the maps that Wahoo has installed, otherwise I might have gotten an Elemnt.

Let me put to bed once and for all as to the charging in-situe of the 1030 unit.
Having freaked out at reading various posts in the forum stating categorically that the Edge 1030 can't be charged without the propriety battery, I saying I have serious doubts over the veracity of the statement.
I've just this minute added a usb cable to my 1030 unit on my H-loop handlebars and plugged it into my E-werks cache battery, without riding, and my Edge unit immediately "woke up" just as it does when I plug it into my computer or a storage battery.

Note that if what you are saying is that the unit actually runs with a USB external battery, then you are saving a lot of folks $120 by not having to buy the Garmin add-on battery. That's a good thing to know.

Do you have a reason to think the 1030 can't be run on any external USB power source? The fact that Garmin makes a specific one isn't evidence that a generic one won't work. They've made a battery pack for Edge and Forerunner units for many years, and all previous models have been able to run while charging. That's actually a differentiating/selling point at least in their watch division for people who run ultra-marathons. People do very long bike rides, too, and while Garmin would like to sell a battery, they don't want to undercut computer sales.

But really all the question is, has anybody actually tried it or read that it works ?. Its curiosity is all and useful for anyone considering paying $600 to know this (should they do a forum search). DC Rainmaker doesn't touch on it and this thread has 6 pages, so when I get a moment I'll read them all.
