Yeah, ditch an item because it sells too well. Not lack of availability; they just had to restock the shelf so much more often than other products.

The supplier of the item to the store may not be able to produce or supply the merchant the goods to restock in a timely manner.
The store may prefer to maintain stock on the shelf in a reliable basis, and not have empty shelves because an unreliable supplier can only resupply in dribs and drabs. The store may prefer not to keep frustrating its customers about if or when the shelves will be restocked due to the sporadic resupply chain of an item. Perhaps it is better to sell another product, rather than keep a shelf empty waiting for an item to show up from the supplier.

Of course, this was back in the pricing gun days, and they were determined not to hire more kids to stock, tag and bag than they absolutely had to. When HEB came along with enough baggers to offer carryout assistance, it prety much killed what little traffic they had left.

Since I'm car-free... if I want to actually buy something, then I'll generally drag my trailer around.
I do like the thrift stores which I often do without a trailer, and I'm probably getting a reputation for putting little things on hold because they were just too big to put in my backpack. Or, yesterday, I did have my trailer, but didn't want to pick up the big/heavier stuff first, so I had the store hold it until I was on my way back home.
For ordinary retail stores, I don't play the game of hunting for stuff that should be stocked... if the first store doesn't have it (or I don't think they'll have it), then I will generally just order online.
