I was reading this post from the beginning thinking about if I should go out. Family will be asleep until at least noon, grams, mom, and boy were at the jazz festival until midnight. Temperature readings all over the place: 45 on the pool equipment, 48 at the airport (CCR), 56 on the home alarm system. I mostly trust the airport since they actually care about the weather.

So here I am sitting on the bench watching the planes take off over my head. A couple kites are working the creek bed looking for food. Wind 6 knots from the north east. Good tailwind back. I'm glad I'm here.

That is a very cool post. Nice bit of writing, very evocative (by which I mean I could feel the thoughts/feelings, picture what it would be like to be sitting there halfway though the ride enjoying the richness of life and the increased energy from the ride.)

My name is Mike and "I am a wuss!". Do not like riding in the cold weather. Have only ridden a handful of times since the first as it has been too cold for me.
went out in 55 degrees and came home very shortly thereafter as my feet and ears felt frozen.

Durn, if you are a wuss complaining about 55F, then what am I? Although I do ride in much lower temps, I hate it when it is less than 70F! At 65F I'm already putting on the layers for warmth.

It's all down to the climate and temperatures you are used to.

I spent last week in southern Spain where the morning temperatures were a balmy 14/15° C. The local club riders were all wearing long sleeve jerseys and long tights. Now I'm no hard-core cyclist but coming from the UK , for me that's still short sleeves and shorts weather.

On the other hand I couldn't ride in the temperatures of the northern states, Alaska or Canada in the winter.

2 weeks ago it was 47* when our group left. Every one was wearing long leggings and long sleeve jerseys and jackets 'cept me. I like it cold. Shorts and short sleeve jersey for me. Makes me ride faster to get the blood flowing and get warm. My buddy calls me the eskimo.

There must be something psychological about the numbers.
Of course being acclimatized to the place you live counts too.

40 in a fog; hibernate or ride exercycle. popcorn optional.

50 - It's time for shorts, riding or not.

55- it's time for shorts and a tank top, riding or not.

60 - it's time to go fishing

65 - already breaking out in a sweat, riding or not.

70 - starting to get too hot to be comfortable outside, seek out the shade, riding or not.

75 - Let's see, I'm down to shorts, no shirt, short socks and tennies. Very few folks want to see a short, bald,
fat guy, with a bushy beard running around "topless", so mostly stay in the backyard. No riding

80 - after 75 I wilt, It's time to "water the gardener", (hold the garden hose on head)

85, and above-- call me again sometime after October.

I rode 59 miles today in 45° weather, other than my hands being cold because I wore the wrong gloves it was a very enjoyable day. A few months ago the weather reports said it was going to be 45° but it turned out to be 22° or lower. I did the same ride and other than my hands almost getting frostbite I was warm. I did have warmer clothes on that day. A stop at a small country store in a tiny town about an hour and a half from home saved my life. I haven't gone put in weather that cold since. But lately it's been warmer temps in the 50°s even. Next week is going to be very cold with a little snow. No more rides for me for at least a week. I have performance wicking under clothes, several arm warmers and two bicycling specific warm jackets. I also Carry disposable hand warmers in case my hands get too cold.

I was riding in Texas about 6 weeks ago and the temp was 30 deg. and wind 12-15 mph. My face burned and my hands were numb, even though I was wearing Gortex -5 deg. C gloves. I couldn't shift the STI or use the brakes. I have decided about 40 deg. F is my lower limit. I am wondering about my heat tolerance when I go to TX this summer. 90 deg and high humidity?

i,ve ridden as low as 20f. Really need ski goggles below that I think. Eyes were very cold.

If my cat ear warmers can't keep the pain out of my ears then it's clearly too cold. This usually hits when the wind chill is lower than 50 degrees for me, so I'm officially a wuss.

It has been quite cold for the L.A. area the last couple of weeks early in the morning when I ride. It has been in the high 30s every day and dropped down to 34 last week. I do okay except my hands. I need to get things you can crack open to keep your hand warm if it continues to be this cold. Having wool socks made for cycling has made a huge difference for my feet.

Dressed'n ready for it to dry a bit (just rained)-- Mostly Cloudy (UV Index 1 of 10):

44° now (but it feels like 41°) with a High of 54° today (guess it's 'gonna feel colder riding against a headwind).

Looks like a good SoCal day for wool.

Years ago I skied in 15 below, but I can't handle the cold like I used to. That said, I'm am currently waiting for it to hit 45* this morning so I can get out for a short ride. Then back to the fireplace.

Guess it depends on the individual. Many I know here in north central Florida would still have a winter coat on. My ideal temp is a ‘winter’ low 60s where the humidity is at least nearing semi tolerable. 57 is still short sleeves for me. At age 52, the one thing I am looking forward to that I hear about getting older is liking it warmer. I would still rather have between 40-65, so not holding my breath.

Sunday was one of those awkward in-between rides. Temp was in the the 60s with intermittent rain. Normally for just a bike ride I'd have worn a long sleeve jersey or baselayer t-shirt under my winter jersey or thin windbreaker, and just gotten wet.

But I was riding to visit a friend and didn't want to get soaked in the rain. So I wore my heavy Shimano Storm Jacket over a long sleeve wicking tee. And I ended up soaked in sweat instead of rain.

That same combo was perfectly comfy the week before when I wore it for a 45 mile rainy ride with temps in the low 40s. Cool enough that I stayed dry under the Shimano rain jacket, but warm enough to stay comfortable.

Some riding conditions, you just can't win.
