Hi Hermes, I know you're just giving me a ration...

The only truly WW part for which I spent big $$$ was the Ritchey seatpost that was on the Hi-Mod. I sold that post with the Hi-Mod frame since it wouldn't fit on the EVO. I got the Zipp cages on sale through a UK shop so while they were more expensive than other aluminum or "plastic" cages they weren't a lot more expensive. The new Deda bars on this bike are heavier than the 3T bars that I was using and I continued with the relatively heavy Specialized stem. Also the Look Kéo Max 2 Carbon pedals are heavier than the Kéo Carbon pedals that I was using last year. And the group is mostly stock Record-10 (ceramic bearing rear derailleur pulleys and ceramic bottom bracket bearings).

Given all of that I assumed the EVO would still be lighter than the Hi-Mod, but I didn't expect it to be just under 14 lbs.

So, isn't the UCI weight limit 15 lbs? Or does that not come into play till you get to a certain level of race?

UCI races only. I have never seen a scale at a Calendar race.

I'd say the main difference in weight between Cleave's Evo and my FC are the speed bars, Quarq, and maybe the frame size. The frame construction is similar.

Cannondale calls it a 52 cm and it pretty much fits me like a traditional (horizontal top tube) 52 cm bike.

Deep section carbon wheels are not necessarily all that great if you are bordering on being light like I want to be. Even at my current weight I have problems with these wheels in strong crosswinds. I know some of the new designs significantly reduce crosswind sensitivity but if (when?) I replace these wheels I will probably go back to something like a Zipp 303 (38 mm deep) wheel.

Wheels can make a noticeable difference in handling but I think the predominant factor is frame geometry so if you like your Bianchi's handling then good wheels should just make it a bit better.

Theoretically, the weight limit only applies at national championship events in the US. I say theoretically because USA Cycling writes up exceptions to the UCI requirements or doesn't check. For instance, at Masters Nationals the past two years they've made some exceptions for TT bikes on dimensions. Interestingly, they also weighed TT bikes this year at the staging area. They didn't formally make exceptions for road bikes in the road race or criterium but they didn't weigh them either.

In 2011, I thought they were going to weigh bikes so I bought a cheap, heavy stem and some aluminum mountain bike bottle cages. I also brought some old chain and an inner tube to shove down the seat tube if the bike was still too light. Then I found out they weren't weighing road bikes.

I presume at Masters Worlds there wouldn't be any exceptions.

I'm obviously doing something wrong... my two road bikes are 16 and 16.5 lbs. The latter isn't too bad considering it is aluminum with deep clinchers and no weight weenie parts. But I might have to put the BMC on a diet.

Shoot, my lightest bike - a Look 585 - weighs 18 lbs, though I could lose a pound just by using a wheelset other than the Open Pros with Ultegra front and PT rear hubs. The Allez weighs 21 lbs with the same wheels. Both weights are ready to ride, including seat bag and bottle cages but no bottles. I've got another 15 lbs to lose off the motor before I worry too much about the bike.

Vance, my Serotta INCREASED in weight this year by about 0.5 lbs, primarily because of the PowerTap wheels. It's now 17.5 lbs. Carbon tubulars are good for at least a pound and an 11-21 Record cassette is very light. That's probably a big chunk of the weight difference on your BMC since we both have the same component group.

Okay, I'd like some style input. My new frame looks very similar to my old one, which initially looked like this:


But evolved to look like this (sorry - no shot with the racing wheels):


I'm considering either:
A. White saddle, white tape, and black cables
B. White saddle, RED tape, and white cables (to balance the saddle)
C. White saddle, white tape, and red cables.

What do the rules dictate? Hard to see, but I have a few red accents, including the spoke nipples on the training wheels.

I think I'm leaning towards going "back to black", as Amy Winehouse sang, for the bars and saddle, but adding some color with red cables.

Rev, that Centurion's 80's color scheme reminded me of the Fuji I bought when I got out of the Navy in the mid-80's. Found this photo online:


I found a training log from that era recently. I was so cute with my epic 20-milers.
