The Burley is Dead...Long Live the Seven Ti Axiom 007 SL

The Burley is gone, soon to be parted and the carcass turned into a yard decoration way out by the back fence. Not a bad ending for a good bike me thinks.

Today we went to the big city and measured and went over desires and plans for a Seven Titanium with S+S. We expect to visit with the Seven folks later in the week, and perhaps have the fabrication start within thee weeks or so.

I'll try to post some details as we go along.

Good thing you aren't hankering for one of those asploding CF machines, but the Titanium wet noodle police will soon be about. Sounds like a sweet ride in the making.

That's got to be exciting! Have you met with the Seven folks yet? What made you decide to go Ti? Seems like most of the $$ builds here go Calfee. We've recently tested a Seven, Calfee, Beyond, one of the CoMos, and a TeamTi. I was blown away by the Seven's ride and handling. Please keep us informed of he progress.

Have ridden one of the few Ti Serrotta tandems . . . impressive . . . both in ride and price!
Planning is half the fun!

Our Seven Ti frame is on it's way to the bike shop.

The frame has S&S couplers, five bottle holders, and pump pegs on the boom tube.

It took several iterations before we arrived at a design that would fit captain and stoker, and still pack for travel. We went through several designs and two sets of fittings. Stoker inseam is over 3" longer than captain. And there have been past medical histories of breast cancer (stoker) and shoulder surgeries and total knee replacement (captain) so we sought out a very comfortable design.

The long stoker design resulted in a "loose tubes" configuration. (think Santana)

We haven't settled on all components just yet, but here's a partial list.

Fork - WoundUp Tandem w/ cantilever
Wheelset - Phil Wood hubs/Velocity Dyad48 spoke/DTSwiss spokes - built by Joe Young
Cantilever Brake set - Shimano BR-R550 cantilevers
Disc Brake-rear - Avid BB7 (we opted for this over an almost new drum brake that I have)
Shifters - Ultegra 6703
Front D/R- Ultegra
Rear D/R - XT
Rear Cassette - 11-32 initially
Crankset/BB- Ultegra (probably)
Eccentric - Bushnell

We haven't fitted components from the frame up just yet. Most likely, Thompson posts and stems, and Profile Design carbon bars.

This has been a long time planning for us and we're excited. I'll post some pictures when we finish up.

FWIW - The bike was finished and shipped on the exact day Seven promised it, once we approved and agreed upon a final design.

We are waiting for our all carbon fiber tandem to explode/disintegrate as some folks opine.
34,000+ miles so far . . .
Of course most commercial airliners that use c/f keep failling out of the sky; some even melt on the runway!

For us it came down to a bit of decision between a Calfee and the Seven. Carbon fiber explosion was not a consideration.

I meant to include this final diagram earlier.

You can tell I married a tall girl (30 years and 2 days ago). Her top tube is 85cm (yes, that's 33.5inches). Let's hope I can get a little more power out of that rear engine now that she will have some space.

Easy to see where the design required tweaking to make a travel bike. The captains section is essentially a "compact" design, all the better after two shoulder surgeries in the last six years.

I can't say enough about how the folks at Seven worked with us to accomplish this. I think we'll be fitting it by the middle of next week.
