oh hey - TTs in collegiate racing? I'm into that:

one thing that hasn't been addressed - and it may be not legal, but cane-creek speed bars (CDR has used them in the past) were legal two years ago, and those are worth a ton of speed (assuming the position is adjusted for them, they compress the position pretty hard).

I used them for a season and my squad got hardware in the As for our region - they were mass-start legal at that point and may still be? I don't know, haven't looked at a rule book in two years. Ah, back when I was an "old-guy-cheater-pants" in grad school.
Also, I scheduled my course load so I qualified for track nats one last time - that was fun, but as much of a caper as I ever got up to.

Other stuff:
Spray-fix (super 77) = yes. Also on the bar-tops, but in the PNW that's more about the wet grime everywhere, IAB is way trickier in Oregon/Washington in March than most of the rest of the time.

I saw a few guys running narrow bars and long stems on what were effectively 'TT rigs' - but that wasn't widespread.
I was running 38s anyway, #tracklife

If I had money I'd have done a Tri-rig, but that was spendy at the time.

Very few of our courses were technically challenging - mostly the big gains were found in the pre-ride and making sure we had rotations/hills/crosswinds/etc sorted out before we blew dudes out the back - OH, and we spent a bunch of time figuring out when to burn our 4th guy off and how to get the most out of them.

Anyone using 3T Aeronova with Ultegra levers? How was the cable routing?

In the last two months I've gone from a 110 to a 120 stem and then to 40cm 3T Aeronovas (which are like 38 cm at the hoods) from generic 42, so ended up getting about 3cm longer and 4cm narrower.

Now I just switched from 172.5 mm cranks to 165mm cranks. In the past whenever I've gotten lower my thighs hit my chest and my hips get super tight so I can only hold really aero for 10-15 mins before having to stretch out. Hoping this helps me get lower and faster.

It's fine. There's enough room to get both cables in and out of both holes.

What do you guys, and gals, think of these wheels, Vision Tech USA Metron 81 | Vision Tech USA , for crits/RRs.
On one hand they are aero, but with deeper profile, and weight will accelerate slower...

Nice build, rims are not going to be as good in crosswinds as some of the proprietary offerings out there.

Cause full build is ~500g lighter?
Or better tires are available?

But I've baffled you before.

Still for everyday without a car to pick you up went with clinchers...this picture is 10 min old.
Not sure the AirForce Blue works on that bike.
These are a light build, cx-ray, alloy nipples, latex tubes and Veloflex 25s (measure 24 wide).
And...a power meter.

See picture above. Under $1000 from ColoradoCyclist now.

I have a pair - junior has a pair. Some folks hate them. They did win RAAM this year - the clinchers.
The tubulars can knock a pound off with the equivalent tires.

I would never go deeper on front than 50mm.
Rear deeper if flat, not if rolling. Aero is the PC of cycling. Weight matters and wind does not behave as expected.

you've baffled me before and your kid's team had more flats in a single race than I've had in a career of racing. Are those wheels rated for Europe?

Why impacts handling in cross wind?

Also I have no idea which wheels you are referring to. I don't see them on coloradocyclist.

-A cross wind is stable, and the rider can adjust to it. Stable winds are like wind tunnels and many wheels are designed to do well in wind tunnels. But change in wind speed requires adjustment of the rider - that they use energy.
-That requires core and while not measured in power meters I've seen it in HR.
-They are heavier. A real rider is not moving in a straight line in a steady state. They are hitting little bumps and pebbles and turning the bike to recover. That has a small cost, but a real one and the heavier the wheels and bike, the more energy is used.
-A 50mm can be pretty close to a 80mm. I get the 80mm does better in the wind tunnel.

This just starts becoming like the wider is better argument. An 80mm non-track, non-flat road on the rear is just too much weight and too much to handle vs the trade-off for a 50mm. IMO - of course.

All those flats happened in a 2 month period. And I think I explained, and hopefully you read - I didn't have the tires available.

That and you abused children by leading them into the NorCal debris.

I got some tubs in the middle of this year. Wow... noticeable improvement in ride quality. I tend to get used to it but then when I ride clinchers then go back to tubs, I'm like wow again. However since this is "aero thoughts".. yes I pretty much agree, I don't see much of a reason to go tubs. My TT bike has a tub front and rear clincher. (old corima/Zipp super9)

Ordered Zipp SL70 aero bars (40cm) and 3T "aerotundo" bars (42cm), to see which I like best.

The zipps actually measure 42cm (drops, c-c), while the 3T measure 43cm..due to how the drops flare out.

I like the look of the Zipps more, but thinking I'll go with the 3Ts in 40cm, since the 42's seem really big, since I hate any kind of "ergo" bars.. the zipps are mildly ergo.

Complicated! But hopefully faster in the long run.

Ah ****. I ordered Zipp SL70 aero bars 40cm because their website said it's c-c, didn't realize drops flared out.

SL70 is a nice bar. The flare gives one the ability to run a narrower bar than they otherwise might and still be more comfortable in the drops/not hit their knees.

i prefer it to the 3T bars. It's been a few years since I've tested a 3T bar (last one was an Ergonova); the Zipp is (or at least was) stiffer.

The Specialized Aerofly is pretty nice, too.

I think I'm probably going with the Zipp bar in the near future. But that is mostly a decision made by cost, as I can get it the cheapest. I think I like the look of the Specialized better.

I'm glad to know the Zipps flare out like that.

Im still considering the Aeronova..might have to get the LBS to order the Pro since I cant find them online anywhere. Still having a hard time with the thought of spending that much on a handlebars though

Yeah it doesn't make that much sense to have the "40" measurement not be at the drops..

Or maybe I'm just measuring everything wrong! But my 42cm non-aero rotundo's measure 42cm at the drops.

Carbon no less... and bars take a beating in pretty much any crash, so it could be an expensive prospect.

But I want a smaller size, someone else will need to get those.

Carbon bars have never been on my radar. I think the Pro are the aluminum version? Either way..considering I paid like $60 for a set of ergonova's a few years ago, $150 for the aero version is kind of a bit of a jump (unless I can get my team discount through the LBS assuming he can get them in)
