My CTL hasn't really recovered from January - February despite putting in a lot of hours. I'm just not getting enough 100+ TSS days. I blame a lot of this on not having time on the weekend, and the gym just trashing my legs. I think it helps, but not at the cost of losing training days from soreness. So I will probably cut it out for 2 weeks, and then go to 1x a week until racing is done.
The good thing is my bad ftp in 2018 is my peak ftp in 2015.

Super windy River Ride today. Finally pushed my CTL back over 80.

Another weekened of no racing.. Followed by another week of moved races next week. 3 weeks of no racing in a row with a **** race the week before that. Gonna go bonkers here. COnsidering driving to a mtb race next weekend just to consider getting some competitive urges out.
Anyways, first rde in the rain in a LONG time today. a bit over 3 hours. Felt like I was back home!

struggling with laziness on this rest week, which has been exceptionally inactive. Think I've ridden for about 3.5 hrs total this week. My time is running out so I'll probably step out in 3...2...

CTL and power output is still pretty much in the toilet. I did put out 360 for 5 this week, and considering my weight is below 135 (the one shining spot right now) I guess it's not all terrible. Still, I'm a quantum leap from where I was five weeks ago. Just plugging away and happy to be doing something, while looking for whatever positive signs I can find.

your body is going through a bunch to heal.
you are injured and worried about 10-12w off a season best? sounds like you should be BRAGGING about that, with the injury!
hope the #s translate for you once you are set free.

all the cyclists may be jealous: a close buddy of mine got diagnosed with stomach cancer (treatment is removal of the stomach). 20% drop in weight in the first few weeks.

you know that vo2max efforts & above are the first ting to suffer when you have to back off, and they never feel great.

Not really worried though, honestly (this is a training forum so I posted something 'trainey'). Can't say if I'll even ever race again. If I do what discipline it might be in. Never mind when. Right now the task is to actually get my hand to function. Without that everything else is moot.

Thought some teammates were getting together to ride at 6am this morning. Got there and re read the message.. 6pm.
Dammit.
Regardless, 1800 feet of climbing in 45 minutes and 4.5 miles on the mtb before turning around to go back to the car and get to the work training I've got going on this week.

Well I'm on the other side of the injury now. On to therapy.

Wasn't it a 4 that slammed into you after your finish?

Yes though still not sure what it has to do with how my thumb functions or if I race again. I’m sure it makes sense to you but it’s eluding me

Felt like dogcrap but hit all my wattage targets. I guess that's good.

Did something very unlike my usual riding - 57 times around my block with the ~20 second hill at ~165% +
It's fun hitting 105 TSS in an hour. Wasn't even mentally difficult except for avoiding pedestrians and cars and buses and cops and cyclists and electric scooters. Wanted to get a little bit of power in between the hills but that just wasn't possible even with all right turns.

If you have to explain it, it's not funny. Back to the drawing board...

There are a few more hurdles, really.
One, will my hand return to normal? Normal as in gorilla grip. If I can't rip the bars I can't really do some aspects of mass start stuff. If I can't do those, I can't win, and then is there a point to the risk? Not sure. Right now I can't make an 'okay sign' or call you a loser with my left hand. So imagining attacking in a race, or sprinting to the finish is all pretty foreign.
I have a lot of metal in my body, along with multiple (read: nearly all) broken ribs, head trauma...That isn't to say I'm scared. I'm really not. All back to normal I have no doubt I jump into a race and ride without any hesitation. And yet still it's simultaneously true that I don't really want another surgery. And (skipping races that finished near the cat 4 race aside) shows you can get hurt anywhere. Hell I could have gotten taken down on the way to the porta potty.
Right now I'd like to be able to zip a jacket or button a shirt. I'm happy to be training though. It has brought some normalcy to my day to day existence. Whether that eventually equates into classic mass start racing will be something I take on at an appropriate time. Right now I'm going to miss out on all my major mass start goals for the year so if I get back to it this year or next, or become a TT guy in the interim it'll unfold when there's some epiphany.

@gsteinb I'm reading the book "The Brave Athlete - Calm the F*** Down and Rise to the Occasion" and I happen to be on the chapter dealing with the mental side of injuries. It's a pretty interesting book and suggest it for anyone interested in the head side of training (a big interest of mine right now) and what they recommend for what you are currently going through is to challenge the catastrophic thoughts (I might never race again) with factual evidence to the contrary even though you might know if it's feasible or not yet and preferably in your control (it's too early to tell how my hand will respond but I will start training when my injury allows). The goal is to create counter statements that focus on the positive to balance the negative emotions of the unknown.
Hang in there.
