Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I be offended, flattered, or terrified?

So I've been road riding for a few years now. Always kind of go for distance slow and steady gets er done. Then I see a person pedaling their ass off on the rec path and they look both ways enter the road and come up right behind me... and say nothing at all... it's happened about five times now. I used to be that person maybe they want to join the roadies or something I just wish they would say something before appearing directly behind me.

Consider that maybe it was because you were riding like you knew what you were doing? I only announce myself to other cyclists if they are 'wobblers', or there is some reason why they might veer left while I'm passing.

Because they are often narrow. One guy has to be in front and the other behind. Hey, this could be worse. It could be about half-wheeling.

That kind of changes things a bit. You're right, that's a bit odd. I'd start to wonder, too.

Sitting on a wheel without announcing yourself and taking your turn at the front is poor form. But if someone does it to you and it doesn't bother you, then let it be.

Ugh, why is everyone so easily offended. Honestly. Just ignore it or grow a pair and tell them eff' off.

If he was riding next to me like an awkward conversation in a taxi I'd be weirded out too though.

Good call, my approach as well. People act as if they live alone on this planet.

A wheel sucker actually slightly improves the lead rider's aero. So in fact, you were being rude for not thanking the guy for the push.

I don't think you should be any of those things, but there's certainly nothing wrong with considering whether such feelings are reasonable. The polite response would be to say "hello," but I don't think anyone could blame you if your greeting was less than warm.

Some people are greyhounds, and will do anything to have a rabbit in front. So, they see you go by and the instincts cut in and they chase until they catch up, then pace.

The fact that it's happened often with no consequences tells you it's pretty benign.

Personally, I don't like being drafted because it imposes an added degree of care should I decide to slow or stop on whim. But I don't mind if they pace off me a few yards back.

So, ignore the greyhounds, unless you prefer to zig across a few feet and lay up, so they come alongside, then strike up a conversation.
