So I've put aside my grand ambitions of gett an overhaul or two done in favor a few nitpick things to try and lift my winter duldrums. So for meh!

As posted in the "Whate you wrenching" threads I completed two mini projects yesterday. I had the Batavus Professional in the stand this morning for a rear Flint Catcher, I don understand how I ended up with only one on some bikes. And I forgot an after pic but if you squint you can see it.

Whilst it was in the stand I thought I try and add this Thermax "Lightening" disc cover I've had for decades but haven't been using. I got this around '90 and I've only seen two, the one a customer ordered and the one I got myself to check them out. We were starting to get a few TriAthlete customers so I figured if a bike in the shop had one they we might be able to sell a few more.

Thermax was apparently new to this, so it seemed to me, but they seemd to really putting some thought into it. You could order any color as long as it was clear of black smoke You also sent the the type of rim, (just the brand model I don think you needed ERD..IRD?) and freewheel or cassette. Herein lies my current problem. Since all my wheels were Suntoru FW equipped that's whay I bought for a MA40 rim. On the FW style cover the center was cut to roughly fit the over the hub shell and you used a small spoke guard to help hold it away from the chain. I forget how the cassette style was secured. Now several years later I have no low flange freewheel wheelsets around and this now a problem.

It likely isn't worth the expense of trying to ship it if I could sell, most everyone uses those those ugle "deep dish" wheels these days instead of discs. So I've decided my best course of action is to simply enlarge the center hole and hold it in place with a spoke protector. Sounds simple enough yes? NO way Jose'!

The wheel selected is a 32 hole shipmano 600 Uniglide hub updated to 7spd HG laced 3 cross. Unfortunately the 32 hole spoke protector I have doesn't seem to fit correctly. Are there different sizes? are factory wheels laced differently? I'll add some pics but I don't 4 cross would be any better.

OK even taking pics of this is hard. Anyway as you can or can't see two tabs seem to line up and two don't.



I always though these were generic and just came in FW, 32h and 36h,


This is way bigger than I need but I thought I could trim it or get my sister to do something with her Circut vynal cutter.

Not really generic. Shimano has a few different models. See the attached from 2011 compatibility doc. Don't see the model # you show. Note the flange width measurement.

Don't know if your 'old' hub has flanges that may be different from the more common modern design.

Also, in your later pic it seems that you are comparing to a different hub, possibly 40H (based on spoke/spoke head overlap) or smaller flange.

Sorry, think my guess of 40H is probably wrong, but that does looks like a different wheel. Maybe 4x crossing.

now let’s see…. I just knew there was enough junk laying around here to cobble this together it's just a matter of thinging outside the wheelbag. With a small stack of "Spoke Protectors" around the flat I just knew there had to something that would work and that classic 6208 hub wasn't going to cust the mustard.


So things are progressing
Winter supplies to ward off the chill I don't really drink a lot but it's nice to have options. My favorite is a nice Sidecar but a Cosmo is sometimes simpler to make.


I don't know I ended working over here between the Island and the range but here I am. since I don't have a hole saw, or at least have no idea where it is, cutting the center larger was a bit more difficult than I expected but I managed without losing any digits or even needing a bandaid!!


Now we are getting somewhere. So since the hub on the Cherry Tomatoe SBX wouldn't work for this I decided to find something else. As I looked around, I decided since the Bertoni already had a Spoke Protector on it that was likely a good starting point for the third attempt.


Now we’re ready to start breaking hour records!! So for the first time since probably 1993 this is on a wheel and hopefully will get lots of road time this summer

I see spokes crossing over the heads of the opposing spokes. It’s 4-cross.

So you know what…. I just realized I couldn’t see the spokes for the trees. Most of wheels are 32 and 3x but this isn’t a wheelset I had built I bought these on here. I never stopped to actually count the spokes, this probably the only 36h wheelset im still using except maybe a set of old Record HF wheels.

The chart in post #3 is from 2011 as mentioned. Just posted it to show that they are not totally generic.

Older versions may be designed to 'sit' further from the hub's flange since the innermost sprocket for <8 speed wasn't so close to the flange.
