Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you have an LBS nearby, you could go test ride a few bikes to get a good idea of the size you need before you buy your bike online. I'm 5'10'' and buying a size 56 Felt next weekend, so a 56 might work for you.

You need to get fitted at the shop. Keep in mind that Trek sizes its frames by c-t (center to top) is a little different from other makes. In your case, my guess would be a 58cm frame, but like I said, you need to get fitted at the shop.

Cheers

Go to wrenchscience.com and competitivecyclist.com and do the fit calculators. Have someone else take you r measurements for these. Your actual (not pants) inseam is critical, as well as your reach. For instance, if you're 5'11 with a really short inseam a 56 may be too big for you. Top tube length is critical. I would highly recommend AGAINST buying without test riding, or you could end up with back, neck, hip, knee etc. injuries that are no fun. Seriously, at least test ride the right size if not the exact model. After you get the bike, a proper fitting by a good LBS or pro might be a good idea.

Could be. I'm 5'10" and ride a 56cm Trek 5200. Get fitted and take a test ride and find out for sure.

Well, you're about Lance's size and he rides a 58 (so they say). I'm 5-11 1/2 and ride a 56 center-to-top and it fits perfectly. They claim that Lance's bike is off-the-shelf, but take a look at how much post shows. Strange.

I am 6'1", with a 32" inseam (stubby little legs...). My 5200 58 fits me well- so 56 is probalby in the ballpark. But like the others said- work with your LBS, spend the time to get the fit right- your back, buns, legs and shoulders will thank you.

thanks for your help guys. im going to look at a trek 5200 2004version that is $2000. the 2005 trek 5000 is 2050 so im think the 5200 w/ the ultegra components may be the better way to go. any thoughts?

btw, anyone from fairfield county connecticut? im looking to ride a lot this summer.

thanks

I'm 5'10'' with 33"" inseam. 56 cm Madone 5.2 fits me well. You may need 58.

I am the same height, but with Trek I usually have to take a 58 because of the top tube length. I have a longer torso and shorter legs.

Its not just seat and top tubes remember to measure the headtube length...'cause you don't want too much fork steerer showing, not only is aesthetically displeasing but so could your back become if your slumped (unless your time trialing). I'm 5.9.5 with 32 inseem i ride a 54cm (c-t) x 54cm tt, 11cm stem with a 12.5 headtube. Its like a nicely fitting glove and probabally too small for a 5'11er. I would get the 56.

A 58 is a place to start. Don't write the check till you have tried a 56 and a 60. Make sure you can get the bars high enough.

Like everyone else said. I'm 5'10" with about a 33" inseam, & I thought 56 going in, but, even though he only had a 56 in stock, he said he'd like to see me on a 58 cause a 56 would show a lot of seatpost showing.

Nice to see an honest shop finally take time to fit someone instead of pushing their current inventory.
With a 33 inseam, you should be on the 58cm Trek.

Cheers
