early rides
I must admit I thought the early am riders were ah nuts.But now I'm nuts too!At 5 am I've been hitting the road and i like it.Quite, uncongested no close calls.I do worry about a breakdown before work.But I haven't had a problem in a year.So I've been riding in a large circular route from the house.

I though 6 am ride is early for me . What time do you wake up for breakfast before the ride ?

Agree with the wonder of early morning riding. Halloween 2010 started riding at 0130. Moon that morning was awesome and was even able to ride without headlight on.

During the school year, I try to get on the road by 0430 so I can get a ride in if I have a sub job that day. If I don't have a position, I still get up 0400 or bit before and just ride later when the sun's out and it's warmer(Fall, Winter, Spring). During Summertime, I'm out between 0500 or 0530 depending on when I get up--want to beat the heat. I did start a ride once at 0130 last year in October, when I did a 75 miler on my route loops.

Back in the day, when I had a paper route, (You remember that? Kids on stingray bikes actually delivered newspapers to an area of the city), I loved the Sunday morning deliveries. Felt I had the city all to myself. Didn't like it that the papers were about three times the size of the other days and usually had to make a trip home to fetch the second half of the delivery. The city was mine!

I love early morning rides. I usually get out around 5:30 AM and my route takes me through farm and woodlands country. It's about 27 mi. It's also cool and quiet and pleasant watching the world wake up as someone has said. Right now we are having a heat wave and it's miserable by 10 AM. Our club B ride is 50 mi tomorrow starting at 8 AM and I'm already dreading the late morning heat.

Early rides in Arizona are a must from May thru at least September. Once you get started on that, you tend to want to keep riding as close as possible to sunrise.

Beating the heat is only a factor for a few weeks during the summer around here, if the fog stays away I like to go out early and ride thru the strawberry fields and vineyards around here. Now that I have built up some base miles I can go out and do more climbing too.

It's 7 AM and 80 degrees w/82% humidity. We are off to our club's B ride for about 40 mi. have to say I'm not looking forward to it. Way too hot/humid for me. Bringing 4 water bottles.

Hard to see how that can be cost-effective.I start work at 7am, so I leave home on my bike shortly after 6am. I like it, particularly on weekends when I seem to have the whole route to myself.

Since I normally wake up by 4:30 every morning, right-after-dawn bike rides come naturally to me. I, too, appreciate the lighter traffic, the cooler temperatures, etc. When I lived in Los Angeles, I always said I got an early start to avoid Smog, Heat, and Intolerable Traffic. (I hope no one has acro[nym]phobia.)

Having said that, I get up at 4 to run during the week, I don't like riding in the dark. It is very nice and peaceful, but there are a surprising number of people out doing the same thing at that time.
On weekends I try to get out by 7 so I can get a good ride in and be home by noon.

I love the early rides. I typically get out and ride between 5 and 5:30. Nothing like a sunrise all to yourself. I ride a combination of streets and MUP. The only issue ever is the skunks on the MUP. I am rarely alone, there are usually a couple of marathon runners and 1 or two cyclists. It also beats the 100 degree north Texas evenings.

Out the door this morning @ 4:30 and on the road @ 5:30..just before sunrise. I had every intention of doing a century but at 57 miles, the temp climbing rapidly I threw in the towel..oh well, another time.

I need my 5:30 or 6:00 early morning pre-breakfast exercise rides. The roads are relatively vacant, as are the MUPs, and my grocery shopping at the end of the ride usually results in me having the entire store and staff almost entirely to myself.

On a year-wide basis, I do a lot of riding in the early morning or late evening hours. And it is sublime. Less traffic. Sunrises. Stars. Beautiful.

I love early morning rides. The drunk drivers hereabouts, and we have more than our fair share, used to land between 2:30-3:00 AM. This year, they have extended their range and are regularly crashing into things up to 4:00 AM. I've taken to leaving a bit later on my rides to account for this.
