Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Custom LiveSTRONG Bike Build with pics and video

I frequent both this forum and RBR and wanted to share what I've been able to learn from both forums as well as why I wanted to build a LiveSTRONG bike.

I'm sure many of you are just like me while working reading many cycling related forums. If you've already seen this on the other forum skip it...for those who haven't here it is.

I couldn't afford the Trek Madone LiveSTRONG bike so I decided to build one myself.

Below is the full story with many more pictures.

https://timthome.blogspot.com/2009/08...tion-bike.html

If anyone knows how to embed the video please help me figure that out and I'll edit this post.

Thanks,

-tim

UPDATE: Seems the bike is getting some internet views which is great! @LiveSTRONGHQ posted a tweet about it.

So basically an eBay Carbon frame with LiveStrong decals? Looks good in any case, and the matching accents are what make it look really good.

You do know that LiveStrong.org is a nonprofit foundation while LiveStrong.com is a for-profit venture?

It looks good, but some carbon bike with decals on it isn't exactly "custom"

For what it is, it actually looks pretty tasteful, and I'm pleasantly surprised. It could have been a lot campier.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

That's interesting. I took a look at when the two domains were first registered, and oddly enough, livestrong.com was registered before livestrong.org (.com July 12, 2002, .org December 10, 2002). When was the foundation first announced?

It would awesome if I could get Lance to see it...I did get a tweet from @LivestrongHQ about it...so that's close and they seemed to like it...so getting some bit of approval from @LiveSTRONGHQ on twitter is a ++

Nice bike, and nice work.

I was also wondering whether your would get a cease and desist letter from livestrong or trek. I would have guessed that long before any praise. Good to see someone with livestrong liked it.

If someone at Trek wanted to hook me up with the real LiveSTRONG madone to spread the word, I would give up my new ride, but until that happen I'll be riding the LiveSTRONG clone. Best I can do for now, money is tight and kids need stuff.

I had some cast vinyl lettering made up on it. Gives it more of a painted on look. The lettering is 2 mils thick so it's thin and the durability of cast over calendar vinyl is way better and the color last longer. Also doesn't loose it's form/shape.

I found this explaination of cast vs calendar vinyl

Looking at it again, I think I like it more than many of the custom Livestrong bikes from this year's tour. Great job, beautiful bike.

That bike looks awesome, congrats. Great bike on a great budget. I support you for supporting such a great foundation. Just a note though the Ebay Kuota Kredo frames are not actually Kuota frames. Kuota Kredo is a name brand just like a Trek Madone. The Ebay versions are "knock-offs" built to look like the real thing. Just a note, you may already be aware.

Kuota Kredo

Great built though! I agree on the comment about Mavic Cosmic Carbones.

I was searching for the carbones for another reason and this came up....So I looked at the video and pics, and I am thinking the exact same thing. Either that, or he can now afford a set of CC Ultimates since he didn't spend a boat load on the frame

To the OP, you are a funny guy for doing all this, not really my thing, but good job, well done! Be proud of if for exactly one week, take pics, show your friends, then "ride it like YOU stole it."

By riding the livestrong bike he is spreading awareness of the foundation and the message they are trying to send.
