cobbles

if you only had a choice between a steel road bike and an aluminum cross bike which would you choose for long races/rides on bad cobbles?

the steel is about 10 years old. its like a 2001 bianchi campione with steel fork. the cross bike is an aluminum ridley with full carbon fork.

B, think its possible to just rent a decent road bike in belgium?

probably, but i've never done it. my suggestion is to contact kilerpenguin or krimsoncarter. both have spent more time there than i have (as a cyclist) recently.

Belgian cobbles aren't the Arenberg Forest.
The main key is to lower your tire pressure, that takes care of any dampening you are looking for.

one thing not so obvious is that the pros wrap their bars 2-3 time for P-R to make it comfortable riding on the tops.

I think I'd ride the Belgian bike in Belgium, no? (Also, because you could fit some nice fat tires on it.)

nth suggestion that it is more about the wheels than the frame. I'd make sure to be on good ol' hand built box section wheels and decent rubber.

Cancellara rode 700x27 last year at Roubaix, with no more than 5.5-6 bar (80-85 lbs).

ive been thinking about bringing my tubular wheelset but im concerned about flatting those and being out of luck.

My concern with my cross bike is ive rarely road it over 60 minutes and those are always races so I dont know what it would be like riding for 9 hours.

My main bike is a caad9 and im worried that would be too brutal out there.

^i've a team mate who's there now and was all of last year. if you want i'll try to put you in touch with him. my initial reaction based only on knowing you and discussions with team mate is your caad9 and normal road set up will be fine.

I concur.
I never had anything special and rode the kermis scene over all kinds of crap just fine.
Arenberg is a bit different of course, but it's only 2.5 k's or what.
Seems a lot of extra worry for just a teensy bit of your trip.

botto,

Normally I wouldn't mention the saddle, but this is different. The cobbles will eat you up even if you aren't sitting. Especially if you are a total nut case and want to do the worst of them. I can think of lots of more fun things to do if I was making that trip.

Good. That means that to you it is a saddle and not a seat. There is a big difference. In many respects it is the difference between the 33 and the 41. On the other hand, if the geometry of the saddle on a rental bike is totally off it will not be a good experience.
