Origami will introduce the FireFly electric this spring. The frame is carbon fiber, the 250W motor is integrated with the bottom bracket so you still have full use of the 9-speed gear set. We are testing to confirm a 35 mile range under "real world" riding conditions. It uses a torque sensor, instead of the common cadence sensor, to more closely match the rider's input with the power assist.....it's kind of like being the bionic man when riding.

In our first prototype, we did put the battery in the top tube, but it made the tube larger than we would like and it looked awkward. The top tube is still larger than on our Dragon model (upon which the FireFly was based) because we are routing the controls wiring, brake cable, and shift cable through the frame in a flexible conduit. The center of gravity of the battery is still pretty low, and it is much easier to remove the battery for charging (although it can be charged while on the bike).

The battery does have a lock. The cover of the keyhole is visible on the side of the battery case in the photo.

No rear rack. We have been toying with the idea of adding one, but just haven't committed to it yet. There is room behind the battery pack, but no mounting points currently (mainly because we based this on the Dragon model which was focused on low weight).

Smart looking bike. Carbon is very premium but I think aluminium or steel is fine especially with motor assistance.

Our first prototype was aluminum, and it was heavier, but it as okay. The real advantage to the carbon fiber here the ability to form so that the motor can be less conspicuously integrated into the bottom bracket and seamlessly melded into the form of the bike.

We used a hub motor on the aluminum prototype, but the mid-drive has major advantages: It is lighter, it keeps the center of mass closer to the middle of the wheelbase, and it allows full use of the entire gear range.

I've read the BF rules on advertising (Forum Rules > Solicitation) and don't believe this post is in violation. We're being given a heads up on an upcoming product with potential benefit to forum members. I, for one, would be interested in such a bike.

There is a process for reporting threads to a moderator if you believe it violates forum rules. For tcs and avole, I hope you did report it so you can get an answer back, and we can get on with this discussion if the mods see fit to let it stand.

I like the look of it, but I'd prefer that it was made of a different material. Carbon is nice, but I'm not a fan. And for me, the pricing, even with a discount, is STILL a bit much for me.

I think its great that we get threads like this. I'm interested in folding bikes and what is coming to market. People may say its advertising but we are all free to criticise or make suggestions and raise comments regarding it. It's not like anything is hidden we all know Pinigis is the owner of Origami bikes. It's clearly stated on every post he makes. I certainly don't think it should be against forum rules. So I hope the thread is not closed or removed.
