FS: 1972 Raleigh Super Course - SoCal

1972 Raleigh Super Course

Looking at the catalog I think it's their 23.5" size which is more like a 59cm
top tube is 56 3/4cm c-c
seat tube is 58cm c-c or 59cm c-t
stand over is 33"

It looks to be nearly original. The frame is in lovely shape and it gets compliments just hanging on the wall. The saddle is dry and tearing near the front two rivets unfortunately.

I was going to do a 700 or 650B conversion because these rims are hookless and for me I'd like to drop the stand over a smidge, but I have so many other projects I know I'll never to get to it. I road it all of 100 yards and it felt great, but I didn't want to stress the Simplex parts without a good cleaning and oil in fear of them cracking.

I'm in Los Angeles, pickup only, $150

That's my understanding as well. Maybe the guys in the Carlton factory were feeling cheeky that day.

I'll take it if I can pay via Paypal on Friday and pick it up on Sunday the 30th. I'm up in the Fresno area but have obligations this weekend and am working six days a week... I have a gorgeous 1970 Super Course that I'm in love with, but it's the 25.5" frame size and I've decided I need a 23.5. The Nervex lugs are also what I'm after. If it actually is all butted tubing then that's a phenomenal quirk and I'd be very pleased if it's true!

It's essentially exactly what I'm looking for right now. I hope we can work it out!

Nice bike. A couple of months ago, I ate dinner with my son directly across the street from that address. Sadly no bike shop there.

@Kilroy1988 that's fine with me if you're interested in making the trip. Coincidentally I just sold my VW to someone who drove down from Fresno for it. I'll PM you to sort out the details and mark it as pending for the time being.

I seriously doubt it's all butted just from my own subjective finger tapping test. I think it's more likely a slight decal bin mix up during assembly.

Thanks! Yes, I'm sure that's the gig with the decal - far more likely than to braze a whole frame together with the wrong tubing. Ha, ha! In any case, I still love how they ride and would be very pleased to own this one. I already have a full set up Simplex Super LJ derailleurs and shifters as well as a set of Weinmann concave rims laced to Avocet hubs that I would put on it, which should liven the ride even further (as it did with my 25.5" example).

Since I'm working my *** off lately my wife will probably be fine with this, and I can promise her a day down south in the mix! Win, win.

Beautiful bike that will clean up very well!
Glad you’re getting Gregory! That’s the last year of nervex professional lugs. I have a ‘71 which is identical except for huret luxe transmission. Please do post pictures when you get it all sorted.

I had to back out of this bargain because a day later I stopped by my uncle's place to collect his mid-'70s Raleigh Professional, which he rode for years and upgraded with many practical components (though perhaps not as pretty as the original Nuovo Record). I'm sure I'll be kicking myself for passing this Super Course up, but a free 531 DB frame is hard to bargain against!

Good luck with your sale, Dan. Thanks for holding dibs through the weekend!

These are great bikes, I have two, a '73 with Capella lugs, and a '78 that somehow feels lighter and more lively. Both of mine were acquired as "frame only", and I had to source parts from all over. Its nice to find an all original and complete one, not often seen, at least around here. Somebody grab it. I have way more in my pieced together bikes than the asking price for this one, but they're worth every $$$ to me.
