Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some dude and his Trek 1200 w/ pictures.

Alright, yesterday I got my Trek 1200, the LBS gave me a discount on it too. I'm new to road biking, but this bike feels so good when I ride it, I am so glad I went with the 1200 instead of the 1000. I rode 12 miles all in all today. The only discomfort I received during riding was the pressure of the saddle on my perineum (the area between the genital and the rectum/anus. It was highly uncomfortable, I could feel the pain and pressure, so more than half the time I wasn't sitting on the saddle. I was only wearing the red shorts, a hanes brief underwear, no padding or anything. I'm trying to read ways to solve this problem. But otherwise, it's great. I plan to go road cycling with a group of people I don't even know in a few weeks, but they are part of a local cycling club, maybe it's a great chance for me to hit the road and explore areas of town I haven't touched on yet and meet new people.

now you just have to save up for clipless and shorts/jerseys.
think of the weight savings you'll make by removing the reflectors from those wheels.

Maybe your to far forward on the saddle. Try sitting a little further back. Might have to slide the saddle forward on the post. Just a thought?

ok A dump the briefs while riding...that will only cause issues but not the one you experienced. You saddle doesn't fit right if your weight is on your perineum..find yourself a Specialized dealer and sit on their ass-o-meter to find out the width saddle you should have. You don't have to buy their saddle if you don't want to (but they do make some great ones) but that width number can be used to find other company's saddles.

Or try moving the saddle down a bit. I was sitting too far foward and moving the saddle forward never seemed to work until I moved it down.

how were you fit for the bike? seems like it's awfully large for you, which could be contributing.

I am sorry but you look like you are documenting the theft of a 1200. 1st pic is of guy with his new stolen bike, 2nd picture shows where you stole the bike from, and the third pic shows the thief (blurred to protect the guilty) falling off a bike because it is to big for the thief...flip it!!!

Can you touch the ground at all while sitting on the seat? Like tlupfer said, seems like it's awfully large for you.

"the LBS gave me a discount on it too" ... probably because they had this large size bike that was in the store forever ... and they wanted to get rid of it so they might have fudged on the obligatory sizing the bike to the customer just to make the sell.

Good Luck,

What do you mean "can you touch at all the ground while sitting in the seat"? His standover height on the top tube seems just fine. He shouldn't be able to touch the ground from his position on the saddle.

This looks like a great first bike. Now get a wedge bag, a frame pump, clipless pedals, bike shorts, a nice jersey, a small multitool, and you will be ready for your first lond ride!

As far as the pain in the area behind the nuts, try angling the seat downward slightly and the pain may go away.

Good luck with your new bike!

His standover does not look fine, look closer, his left foot is on his tip-toe and the top tube is jammed into the crotch.. this bike is too big

I am trying to give him a break, the problem he is talking about can be very serious to a young man's future. If the bikeis too large it is better to solve it after 12 miles, a good lbs would let him exchange for a proper size bike.

Congrats on your new bike, it is SWEEEEEET! IMHO you are riding a bike that is too large, with the name DrJeepney, and your terminology about the body, you are not a kid showing off you bike, but a bright man excited about your discovery of road biking. This joy will only grow with a proper fitting bike.

Congratulations. By the way, you should not be able to touch the ground while you are sitting on your saddle. Stock saddles are often not very nice, but before you swap it out try to get a nice pair of cycling shorts. Trust me, you get over feeling naked/like an idiot fast enough and it will help with comfort. Go back to the shop where you bought it and ask for a little help tweaking the bike for fit.

Enjoy your new ride.

Agreed, but you should be able to stand flat on your feet while standing over the top-tube, he is on his tip toes in the pic

Newbie should be able to stretch and touch the ground with feet while sitting on seat, doesn't look like you can do this so seat may be too high.

Can't see how bike can be too big though since there is practically no head tube!

He's on his left tip toes because he's bending his left leg -- notice that his right foot is flat.
Stand up and keep your right foot flat while getting on your left tip toes -- see what happens.

Still don't know if the frame is too big though. With those baggy shorts it's a bit hard to tell how far up that top tube is going.
