Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I Cream it or shave it or both?

I rode my first century Sunday. My but is rather soar. I have performance shorts with a chamois. I have ridden several 56 mile rides and many 20 to 30 rides and never had any issues. The century got me though. My crease between my cheek and leg is even soar and red. I am also a hairy beast. I am wondering if the hair is a problem. I really don't want to shave my rear end as it would take a while and I am not sure how willing my wife will be to help me in this area.
Would Chamois cream work? I have never used anything and really am an amateur for fun and exercise cyclist. I am riding in the Bike Ride Across Georgia starting Sunday. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Jake

chamois cream might help, you might also need a different saddle that fits you better.

Be sure to attend the butt butter demo before the century. They are both informative and entertaining.

Shaving your butt seems a bit extreme to me.

You should see it. It would be like shaving the shaggy Das butt and making him walk backwards. I am going to try some but paste and go from there. I am only going to be able to ride one more time before Saturday so a saddle change is not going to happen yet.

You don't want to do any hair removal. That will just exacerbate your troubles.

You do want to get a better pair of shorts. Performance doesn't make any good shorts. Sadly, you have to spend pretty serious money to get chamois that will hold up to longer rides.

And chamois cream is necessary for a lot of folks. I'm not sure if the brand matters - some people swear by one or another - but something to cut friction is very helpful.

the hair doesnt cause the irritation, the friction does. i got some body glide from my LBS, it looks like a little stick of deodorant but its a skin lube that wont soak in or rub off when you sweat. i also use it when running and since ive used it i havent had a single spot or irritation. im sure you can find something similiar in your area.
