Vintage raleigh bike - asbestos and lead concerns?

I'm looking at a vintage raleigh sprite 5-speed, there is paint chipping, but it is maroon, a dark colour. Would it have lead in the paint? Also, could the brake pads have asbestos?

It is very unlikely that the brake pads contain asbestos. But drop $5 and get new pads. It will improve your braking. As to the paint, I would avoid chewing on the frame, just in case there is lead present.

Unless the paint is really chalking and peeling really bad and the paint bits find their way into your water bottles.........there should not be any worries about the old leaded paint on bikes....

+ 1. This could be the best advice yet given on BF.

You can buy kits for testing for lead based paint at your neighborhood hardware store.

OK, the OP's question is a little far-fetched, but I often have wondered how much chrome I've inhaled while de-rusting old steel rims with a wire brush on an electric drill. I usually do it outside, and lately I've put on a painter's face mask, but for a long time I didn't. Blech.

I contour ground asbestos lined brake shoes in high school. I'm sixty four.

The OP should worry about riding in heavy traffic.

I've got a pretty severe case of hypochondria, so I don't need any additional things to freak out about. I didn't buy the bike anyway, it was rusty and had a bent crank. I'm getting a new papillionaire roadster instead

I've never heard of a case of hypochondria being caused by lead poisoning but I suppose it's possible.

And you're really like your brakes to work asbestos possible.

But you can't buy lead paint or asbestos brake pads?

1) NO - Paint was simple enamel. Lead-Free.
2) NO - You're kidding, right? Rubber, rock-hardened maybe over time, but not asbestos.

Hi, I know that it is a little too late but I also think that it is not so good that the brake pads contain asbestos. They will not be so comfortable and even can damage your skin. I have found on the internet a blog about Asbestos through Hanging Drywall and what impact it has on us. You can read more here mesotheliomalawyers.com if you want. I found the information very useful and even didn't know some facts. So just take care of yourself and try to avoid the harmful things from your life.
