Great article on centuries. I had a friend in the late seventies that did them and tried talking me into it. It didn’t work and still have never done one. I love the ads and cruising through the old cycling mags sure brings back memories.

Brings back memories! My best racing summer when I was at my strongest. 10,000 miles easily if I didn't havce my big accident in early November.

Two ads jumped out at me. One was a bike shop I didn't know then but 3 years later I;d be living down the street. Stones, in Alameda, CA. Diablo Scott saw the tires and what they were selling them for. Bought my race tires locally but yes, Clement Criterium Setas.

But (for me) much bigger, the Jones Cycle Wear ad. They made our NEBC jerseys for several years. Custom fit, good fabric (at that time - this was long before the new wicking synthetics) and very high quality workmanship. I bought a bunch of them. Two through the club at discount and several more for myself. And, again, for me, it went much deeper. Grace Jones was also the district racing rep. At many of our races. If you wanted to put on a race, it had to meet her approval on rider safety issues. We got to ride well run races on good courses.

That fall, 5 days after my crash, it was announced at the NEBC annual dinner that I was in neurosurgical intensive care in a coma. I never heard but it was a given that Grace and her husband were there. Next season, when I showed up at races as not much more than a shell of the previous season, Grace was my biggest fan. She got to see my improvement over the season. I finished the previous season just a couple race placings from upgrading to a 2. Now impossible with my poor condition. I could place in the June Vermont races (and did) but not well enough for upgrade points. Rest of the summer was the States, 10th place which Grace witnessed but again, not enough for points and a bunch of short fast races I never could place in,

But I knew this was my last season of racing; that I needed to do re-hab and get back to my profession. Really wanted to do one more long race in the late season when I'd have as much recovery as possible. The Mount Washington Road Race. Cat 1,2. Called Grace and asked her if I could upgrade to ride that race to end my (short) racing "career". She agreed. Then watched me over the summer riding Cat 1,2 criteriums for a few laps of speed work. Wouldn't take me long to get dropped. I'd keep going until the field came around. At least once Lynn Lemair caught me, starting with the women. I jumped on her wheel and drafted until that field showed, going much further behind this locomotive (National Women's TT champ). Grace got to watch all of this.

September, the Mt Washington RR. That year it was 113 miles point to point. No mountains. Very windy. Winning break left at ~50 miles. I got dropped. We were riding a NH State highway open to traffic. Follow van with Grace in the right lane behind us. I stayed mid-lane so they could not pass me. Eventually I caught the next dropped rider. We caught the next and next until 6 of us got back on board. Grace watching all of that from the front row seat.

The next week I rode my last race; a glorious romp around Martha's Vineyard after the summer crowds in to-die-for weather. Grace got to see me in finish in the 1,2 field again. My heartfelt thank you. Sadly my life took me across the country. Never crossed paths with her again. Learned much later she was deep into Alzheimers.

I still have two of those jersey. Some crash damage and a lot of sun, especially my favorite, the 1977 club jersey I raced at my best. Wore my 1978 training Jones jersey last week riding with the C & V crowd and putting in a 100 mile day. Finished another today (much warmer and I rode a modern jersey!) to come home the this thread.

Great article on the century rides. It's been a long time since I completed a century ride, but I did a number of them when I was in my 20's and 30's. Funny how my reactions where as described. All gong ho in the first 25 to 30 miles...dread until mile 75, then agony to finish off and telling myself I would never do that again. I miss those days
