Full Size Folders
I've been thinking of getting a folding bike for a while now, but haven't found a brand or model that I'm crazy about. While the Montague mountain bikes are nice, they don't really fold as well as I'd hoped. For me, there wasn't a big difference between folding a Montague and taking the front wheel off my 26" mountain bike. I'm just looking for suggestions for road, mountain, or hybrid. Thanks in advance!

I actually just got a ChangeBike from flatbike.com. I got the 612 model with the large frame which is a 19". There is a larger 21" too. By the time the front wheel is off, the pedals are off, and the seat post is down it's surprisingly small. I even went with the wider handlebars which does add some length but for me a more stable ride was more important. The Montagues are full size and rugged but I just don't like that fat top tube design...... See my post here and check out this blog post from the flatbike website that explains the folded dimensions of the Changebike.

I have a TernJoeP24, and I quite like it. It's not as strong as a Montague, but the fold is pretty good. Especially since I use a quick release to easily and speedily rotate the handlebars. Plus, it's a little bit less $$$,...if that's a consideration for you.
This isn't my thread, but there's a good amount of useful information in it:

Hello
I bought an older steel Dahon Espresso for my wife. Solid bike does not go out of adjustment. She likes the ride ,alot, primarily because the frame fits her well. Components are near the average level. There are some thread s on the forums where folding enthusuiasts have upgraded these frames with better components and turned them into road bikes.

You can also keep your eyes peeled for an old Fuji Folder. They pop up a lot on Craigslist. I just sold mine for $150 in perfect condition with many upgrades. You can usually find them for under $100.

I had one of these and it was a very interesting design. The original components were lower-end, but it is a great platform to build upon. Lots of them are in very good condition because the original owners didn't have the lung capacity to pedal them very far.

Helix has been taking people's money($$millions!$$) from 2015; without delivering a single bike.
I wouldn't recommend anybody give them anymore till they actually start making bikes.
There a few folders using 24", 26", 700c wheels. But as you have found out; the fold is not that small.
You may want to look into folders that fold small(w/ smaller wheel); but ride like a "full" sized bike.

I agree about helix being a non-recommendation. Isn't the helix a vaporware product? Why recommend something that, technically AND officially, doesn't even exist.

Are there shops close to you that carry different brands/styles of folding bikes?
Here in New York City we have BFold. They have many folders; various makes and models.
You can see them side by side and discuss the pros & cons of each. Might be worth your trouble
as you're not that far; Boston.
