Absolutely, age 11-17.

Dad's rule was: below 5 degrees or more than a foot of snow, wake him up. I never figured out how to fudge the temp.

It was a 6-mile route, and I could do it in 35 minutes in the summer if I went all out. Toughest bike I ever had.

I walked the heavy snow days, got blisters in those boots, of course. Took my time, because a foot of snow meant no school that day, and the sooner I got home, the sooner I had to shovel, a fact, which, now that I think of it, my Dad probably figured out when he made his rule, so he could sleep in.

Morning paperboys saw a lot of stuff they'd never see in the daytime. "Cheaters" had nothing on us.

Yep. The pre-dawn hours throwing papers was a paper boy's own little world. Even the time spent rolling the papers was kind of nice, I would do that on our front steps. Totally quiet, dark, you could get your thoughts together doing that.

It was a world.....I think I was scared to death the first 6 months, every noise. That picture is probably me at age 16 or so, when I finally weighed more than 90 lbs. Standover was not an option.

That's some serious kit . It must have been a fascinating to fly in such a type of heli with so much history behind it.

Not to hog bandwidth here. Funky machines. The "seat belt" was all of 3/4" with a pretty simple hook, and the seat was a canvas sling. Feet could be on the rail outside, or inside. When over the snow caps, that open door meant it was damn cold! Otherwise, hours were spent just above rooftop level where eye contact was real. Some of the tribal guys were more apt to shoot at us for looking at their women (this is real!) than because we were counting their acres of opium production.

Yup. That's a Leica M6ttl in my hands in the first photo.

Yeah - I enjoyed my rides in them, but then again I was in the Canadian Rockies, not a war zone.

As an aside - are you sure that door gun is 50 cal? It doesn't look like an M2, or even American made. I'm not familiar with non-American 50 cals, so I'm curious. Can't tell from the pic, but the gun almost looks Russian to me.

To be honest, I didn't pay too much attention. When it was being fired, it was noisy as hell. But we were under orders to evade ASAP. When fired upon, the NWFP Agency Political Agent (real position that remains unchanged since the British Great Game days) sends his men in to find out the who & why. That's how we heard that it was more often for getting too close to the women...

The hardware is Pakistan military. Dunno where they were procured. We just called 'em the .50 calibers. Looking closer, they don't look quite that big. I was mainly trying to keep track of acre counts, and hoping no Golden BB had my name.

Sheesh, I was shaking in my boots on that jump.. No parawings here.. just a couple AFFs, with those instructors with me. Trying to boost myself up to do another one. Yup, I gotta boost myself. looking out over that vast air space, and the jumpmasters yell at me "do you wanna jump?" The "no" was fixed on my mouth, but I slipped and fell out the door!!

good for you, Italuminium! I was hoping to get my pilot's license... but then I had a baby instead :-) Now, my life is all about tricking out the streamers on her hot pink 12" wheel bike.... it's another kind of flying, soaring.

LeicaLad, me myself, I wouldn't be doing any kind of opium crop survey in any vehicle that didn't have Pakistan military markings! Keep safe. Or perhaps better to say Khuda hafiz.

Ah well, still not too late and by the looks of it you're up in the sky with joy with your little girl. I hope I have that fortune one day too .

Good idea not to let Mom see that one. Not even my kid, and I almost passed out! I thought I was invincible when I was 12, too. : ) Pretty impressive photo, though!

Went on a 6-day, 500 mile tour down the PCH in California from San Francisco to Los Angeles at the end of July with an organization called Venture Expeditions!

Here's me at the start in front of the Golden Gate Bridge:

Then me at the Santa Monica Pier!
