Interesting, I wonder if they've made progress, or prototype that's ready.

Several years ago, I recall reading about one of the US car companies developing a super-cheap car for sale in developing countries. Seems like the target price was $5,000 or so.
The problem they found was that people in those countries with $5,000 would rather buy a used "real" car than some super-cheap new car.
The bigger problem is that they were trying to develop what they thought other people needed, rather than what those other people actually wanted to buy.
I wonder if that is not the issue here. It might be informative if they'd go to some of these places and say "Do you want to buy this bamboo direct-drive tricycle with concrete wheels for $100? Or would you rather buy this Chinese-made regular bicycle for $30?"
