40 hard ridden miles in 100 degree heat. The weather came from the north this evening,
so I peddled hard to beat the showers on the return. Got a bit wet the last 10, but thankfully no lightning storms like Tuesday.

21 miles to and from work today. Upper 80's, humid and sunny on the way home. Yikes! Used the 24 oz polar bottle with a chunk of ice in the bottom - instead of the 20 oz version.

I get to go on an approx. 30 mile trail ride with my son today. We will both be riding Genesis GS29 mtb's. They are cheap but they just keep going. :-)
My son (the youngest of my boys) is 30 years old, has a wife and three kids of his own. It is always a privilege to spend time with him.
I am blessed.

33.7 miles, low 80s, 70% humidity. Birthday Sunday, but I'm going to someone else's birthday party at NOON! Way to break up the day.... (But really nice people.) Might go for 45.99 miles on Monday (74 km, age + 1), if the weather and my body support the effort.

I had the joy of a 22.55 mile ride with my son. Part of the trail was pretty rough so we had to walk our bicycles through it (an experienced mountain biker might have been able to navigate it but it was too much for us.)
Lunch with my son near the end of the ride and then home.
What fun!

16 miles Friday night after the temp dropped to 90F. Pleasant night. First time back on the road bike since Monday. Loafed around on the hybrid the rest of the week to remind myself I needed some recovery rides.

43 miles with the club, out early to beat the weather. Yeaterday's ride was oppressively hot...managed just 30 in 100 degree heat

Just got out of the shower and relaxing from a nice (but hot) bicycle ride here in Richmond, VA down to the James River and out to a great Chinese restaurant called Mandarin Palace, turned around and rode back home. All in all, the ride was 15.10 miles in 56:30 for an avg of 16 mph. Not too bad... The photos tell the story:

The route from my house on MapMyRide...

I stopped at 3 Sports (excellent LBS on River Rd & Huguenot) even though they weren't open yet. It was funny - a husband & wife bicycle couple stopped also and we chatted. They loved my C&V '85 Fuji Del Rey, but suggested I upgrade into something newer once 3 Sports opens up (thanks, but no thanks... My old Fuji is a classic and built like a tank. It's "old school" and just keeps on going and going...)

Stopped at the Z-dam along the James River. Look at how low the water level is! Normally it's ROARING over the dam! Good Lord, do we need rain! Look close to the right, and you'll see a young guy with a fishing pole, standing on the dam!

If anyone is into Chinese, this restaurant called Mandarin Palace on Forest Hills serves excellent food!

As seen in this photo, there was NO WAY I was going to ride along Forest Hills, so I wisely turned around in the parking lot and headed back to Riverside Drive, and back home...

Lastly, I stopped at River Road Baptist Church (even though I'm Presbyterian) seeking some "Divine Guidance" in getting me home safely and not dying from heat exhaustion!

Haven't posted in a few days but since my last post, I've done two 40 mile rides and 30 for today, which was suppose to be a 60 mile ride. The weather had different plans and didn't cooperate and brought us a "thunderstorm out of nowhere" around mile 26. We felt the first two thunder cracks and made a beeline to the parking lot in turbo mode. Waited the thunderstorm out at the ranger station, then packed it up and went home. It's been raining on and off since then.

36.8 miles (59.2k). Beautiful ride out to Mayberry Park @ 14.21 avg. The metal bridge with wooden slats I walked over because the wood is so badly warped it's too rough to ride.
21.7 miles (34.9k) yesterday. Forgot to post because I had a noon dental appointment. I should get my new metal-based plates the middle of Aug. It's only taken a year.

Longest ride in past 12 months

23.5 miles with an average 14.3 mph. Last weekend I felt like I could maintain my pace indefinitely but didn't have time to push beyond 20 miles. Today I did. If I had brought a third bottle of water and maybe some food, I might have been tempted to do more. Considering this was on my 'slow' bike, I might check out some group rides.

22 miles with hill intervals. Even after dark it was still hot and sweaty. And darned asthma had me wheezing and gasping for air. Still managed a couple of personal best times on some hills that usually kick my butt. I'm still slow, half the speed of the faster riders on those segments, but I'll take it. Any improvement is good.

43 miles on another hot day, 91F stopped at the park and unclipped the wrong foot, fell and skinned my knee for the first time in a long time. Right after that I got a flat. Otherwise it was a beautiful ride.

A repeat of yesterday's weather only earlier. Got in 15 miles this morning before the skies opened up.

26.0 miles (41.8k). It was quite warm at 8AM. I've noticed a subtle difference between the two Roubaixs, 2011 Expert and 2012 Pro. Basically the same frame but the lighter weight cranks, wheels, and electric shifters on the Pro make it that much better. Turbo Pro tires on the Pro, Conti GP4 on the Expert (and a super-comfy Selle SMP Extra seat), either bike I'd rate at two points above Excellent. Fantastic machines.

53 miles on a club ride yesterday in Bartholomew and Brown counties. Lots of hills. About 1500 feet of elevation gain. Spread out over lots of hills.

After yesterday's invigorating ride, I set out for a repeat performance, but threatening clouds and eventual rain cut me short. Barely 30 miles and caught in rain for the 3rd time this week.

And to think I cleaned the bike yesterday...it vacuumed up every grain of sand possible....

Got 50 miles in today on the old Raleigh. Had to put new tires on it, the other ones were over 12yrs old and one went flat. Didn't want to take a chance. Went with Continentals in a 28c. Rides much better than the Bontrager 25c's. Got out at 0630 to beat the heat. It kind of worked, still got back soaked.

22 miles Monday between 10 am and noon. Needed a new tube, took the long route to the LBS. Temp was only in the low 80s but muggy from overnight rain. Felt good to get out anyway.

31.5 miles (51.7k), most of it combining two different rides with Kiwanis Coffee Riders (but we didn't stop for coffee). Found a hill up Vista Blvd where the invisible gravity truck had just dumped some. Overall great ride.
