New Shimano WH-MT15 Mountain Bike Wheelset - spoke bolt protrusion

Hi everyone,

I just bought a brand new Shimano WH-MT15 mountain bike wheelset, although it's from around 2011. When I received it, I noticed that four spoke bolts on the rear wheel protrude from the nuts by 1-3 threads. Is this normal? The front wheel also has about 2-3 of these.

Do I need to tighten these spoke bolts with a spoke wrench? If I don't, will I risk breaking the spokes?

The wheelset appears to be true and round, but I'll be getting a truing stand and spoke tension meter tomorrow. I'll check the tension then.

Thanks for any help!

A few things stand out to me.

-Use of the term “spoke bolts” concerns me that you have no idea what you’re doing, and you could probably damage the wheels, not fix them.

- You said that they’re true, why mess with it?

- The length of thread on a spoke doesn’t need to be uniform, as long as the spokes are the correct length. They could be perfect, you can’t gauge anything based on exposed thread.

- Have you checked spoke tension?

Just because a couple of threads are showing doesn't mean somethings wrong. It happens on mass produced wheels. If it's true without hops, install and go ride. Stop mucking around with it.

Mess with the spoke threads on a true wheel, and it won’t be true anymore. A wrong turn here, and a wrong turn there, and pretty soon you’ll be going down a rabbit hole you’ll wish you didn’t.
