Pedal problem- large feet
Hi, all
I have a Surly Crosscheck. I switched out the pedals with a pair of Shimano SPD hybrid pedals, anticipating trying clipless at some time in the future but wanting the platform option also.
My issue seems to be that since im a larger guy i can't close my legs parallel to the frame and so my pedaling resembles a bit of a duck like stance, feet splayed outwards about about a 30 degree angle. I also have flat wide feet. The hybrid pedals feel small, like, finding them with my feet feels really strange. Are there extensions for pedals, or hybrid pedal options with a larger platform option? I like the pedals I got and I can't return them to Amazon, and I got a good deal on them anyway. I don't want to take them off and put the plastic ones back on, either if I can avoid it because they are slippery.
Am I just being hyper sensitive to this, and it will go away with time and weight?

I have quite large feet too, size 13 and when I started on platform pedals I felt like my shoes were too large for the pedal and felt the shoe's sole bending. I've since got SPDs and it's such a huge difference, and the switch to clipless hasn't been too bad. I'd go get some mountain bike shoes and start using the SPDs.

Non omnino gravis
iSSi makes SPD pedals with +12mm spindles, which really helps for the big-footed. I'm using the +12mm iSSi Trail pedals, and my heels now just clear the stays. I was on Shimano PD-M520s to start, and had to mount the cleat in an uncomfortable position to keep my feet clear of the bike.

There are pedal extenders, google it as there are a ton of choices.

size 15 shoes (size 50 bike shoes) I several standard pedals.
the duck thing takes concentration and weight loss to correct. Its just like faster cadence, it takes practice but you can do it. I have more issue with my heel hitting the frame in my pedal stroke if I am tired.

Are your feet splayed because you're concerned about heelstrike? Even subconsciously. Do you get heelstrike if you don't splay your feet? I'm wondering if your issues are more to do with technique than the pedals not being wide enough for you. Also I'm of the opinion that these so called "hybrid" clipless/hybrid pedals are a bad idea, as they essentially give you the worst of both worlds (they're bad at being clipless and platform pedals). Note that given the placement of the cleat on a cycling shoe, where the cleat clips on is likely not going to be the middle of your foot, especially as the cleats have some side to side adjustability.

Good question, DR. My feet are naturally splayed a bit when I walk. The frame itself is fine for size- I got one size up (58cm) so I could stretch out a bit at 5'10". I dont have fenders and so there is nothing to strike with my heel and I have distance between my heels and the rear QR. I tend to use the ball of my feet on the pedals but i'm not confident enough with the bar end shifters and hood brakes to ride, gear, brake, and clip/unclip at stops at the same time, I dont think.
I just feel like ther is not much pedal beneath my feet, like im 'missing' them by not having my foot all the way. It could be subconscious since they are smaller than the stock platforms that came with it. I have some straps that are used for BMX type racing that I can put on the pedals to try, maybe?
I was thinking of getting a walking cleat show so I could have the stiffness in the forefoot and then work up to useing the cleats that I have, but im not sure of the sizing being a 11 W. Thats another topic, though.

I have size 16 feet, regular D (M) width. On my commuting/touring bike, found the Sabot pedals are nice and wide & work great with sandals & tennis shoes: Grand Cru Sabot Pedals - Pedals - Components
On my snow/ice bike, I use MKS RMX: Amazon.com : MKS RMX Platform Pedals - 9/16", Silver : Bike Pedals : Sports & Outdoors
They are narrower, but with hiking boots on, don't notice it.
