Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

assuming they're both on the same size wheels, no. the black one is 2 or 3cm bigger, even accounting for photos from slightly different vantage point etc.

Me too. I loved the last house I was in because it was almost always quiet. No fireworks, ever, and no bands or other loud music in 16 years.

Now we have neighbors who blast their crap sometimes. They're better since I complained to them relentlessly, but they still do it. If they are having a party or loud music 3 feet from my window, I get crippling anxiety. If I come home and there is even the threat of loud music I get a horrible feeling of dread.

The most recent time he was blasting Spanish music on his giant boom box for 4 hours. It gave us both headaches and I finally went out to ask him to stop it.

I have had trouble at work when guys blast their crap. Almost got into a physical altercation twice. When I was about 30 I asked another mechanic to turn it down and he wouldn't. I finally took a big steel bar and threatened to smash his radio. He turned it down.

Same thing happened about 10 years later only that time I called the guy out and called him every name I could think of. He relented and turned his noise down. I felt bad afterwards because he was a lot smaller than I am.

When I got my inheritance there was an extra check, on the side. $1600. My share of an insurance policy my mom bought in 1941, when she was 17. I dedicated it to new bikes. dedicated to her. I bought both Treks and a Centurion Ironman with that money and spent less than half of it.

Part of me gets it - for folks that have lived here a long time that can be a bit chilly.

But we're also talking about one of the first 65-70 degree days at the end of winter, not the first cooler day in the fall.

I mean, living in IL a 40 degree day in February feels the same as 80

This is one source of tension about our move. I don't like people. Before we cleared out the back of the yard, I could look out and not really see anyone else. Now I see into the yards across the creek, which is okay. Mrs. GJ seems to want the urban experience, or at least inner suburban. But I grew up with this:

Definitely not just you.

New employee at work that sits right next to me hums all the time. And our office is incredibly quiet.

May need to look in to some new headphones. I've been using bone conduction ones for a while and I had liked how I could listen to something but also hear my surroundings. But now the additional environmental melodies ruin everything.

I also can't eat around anyone without a fairly high amount of background noise. A meal in a quiet house is torture.

Maybe he was out early? There have been days when the temps where I rode spanned the range from low 40s to mid 60s within a single ride. I know, I know - "Layers!", but the problem with layers is once you take 'em off, they gotta go someplace.

could include the 90’s with the 70’s - 90’s rock music was (also) outstanding

current rock music ...? ... good bands are out there - but in smaller quantities ... indie types etc

the last Tool album - Fear Innoculum released in 2019 - is a great one and one of the few recent albums I can listen to cover to cover (over and over lol)

No, they can't be in the same class. The '90s are OK.

Crappy ride again this morning. No motivation at all.
Was supposed to do intervals, but it was colder than predicted and I knew in the temperature I would over heat and then freeze after the first set. Doesn’t really matter my legs were not having any of it. I tied to just do some tempo 5 mins on 5 mins off to Spice things up, but gave up at the first set. I really didn’t want to be on the bike at all. If I do t ride i’ll have a feeling of self loathing for next 4 days while I am at work. I’ve gotten myself in a rut with these early start and early finishes. I can only do the same basic route now.

Clicking is gone in the turns so there’s that.

We are in ark building rain this morning and 50 mph gusts coming after it passes through. Either trainer or overeating today; I haven't decided which, yet.

Seems road disc is becoming the 'go to' choice. Having made the switch, I'm happy its not as bad as everyone thinks. Sure it's a little heavier, but I like the improved stopping power.

Yeah, I accept the growing chance that my next road bike may have disc brakes. It will be a new skill set I have to learn which makes me drag my feet, but I get it.
