Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does your group pass riders too close?

Sup guys, the weekend hammerfest ride with 100+ people hit a rider two weeks ago. Sent her to the hospital, there was like a 20 MPH speed difference between her and the group. The group maintains that it was her fault, she made an illegal blind u turn while wearing headphones and couldn't hear guys yelling at her. Ive talked to multiple cyclists who tell me they think the pelotons in the area are a menace, that they've been almost run off the road, etc. People are continuously trying to make this ride safer, but from what I can tell its mostly about getting people to stop or atleast slow down for stop signs and call out dangerous things. When talking to a "leader" who is respected, I said that we should give more room, at least a couple feet. He responded that encroaching on the cars makes them hate us more, and they kill us. Screw the cars, they hate us anyways, I think we should be more mindful of our fellow riders even if it means putting ourselves at risk. Slowing down when passing them is not an option. Do any of you guys have similar experiences? Apparently its almost unheard of for us to hit someone, but we scare people all the time

We don't usually hit people either, you get extra points for that, but scare them all the time too. I got some dracula kit to ride in, we have zombie days, sometimes dress down like gladiators and surround people on hybrids. Have you ever played foot down with angry roadies who can't lift their swords?

He's not. You should see the sparks against the road when they drag their swords at 25 mph.

Sup Larry! You need to track this chick down. Pulling that stunt, she was obviously hoping for some attention. Probably has a bent derailleur hanger after the wreck. Watch some YouTubes so you can fix it for her. Also, don't be shy about telling those club honchos how they need to do stuff. They've seen you in action and surely value your opinion.

Well yeah in the other part of the world but we are in 'Murica the best part of the world. Larry Sellarz for President 2020. Also bro only 100+ people at your hammerfest 'sup with that, we have 600+ and we sent 90 people to the hospital and 6 to the morgue but it was because they weren't on Cervelos or Pinnarellos and 4 of them tried to ride with flat bar monstrosities (drops or be dropped dead) and said hello like some weirdos. You should have seen this one dude's sick overtake he crashed into like 20 people but didn't give up his aero tuck once unfortunately one of the arseholes that were in his way scratched his oversized pulley wheels and he lost like .0002155 watts. It kinda got ruined when we were riding like 7 abreast on the bike path and some dick complained we were not sharing it and going too fast for his children but he was the dick because I had to run over his child and it got blood on my new Bontrager wheels. If they don't like it they should really not be on our training path. They know we use it from noon to 3 and we are pretty cool dudes. My skin suit was so tight it nearly cut of circulation but I beat that guy who had a Trek that wasn't a project one I left in the dust like he wasn't even racing me even though I had done all the beeps in my head.

Yeah but I didn't see the crash, got dropped. Also guys im not lying or embellishing lol, these guys are just crazy. Here's an article from 2013 about how a truck passed too closely, so people chased it down and started wailing on it. https://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/...oad-rage-event this is silicon valley, not uncommon for there to be more than 150 people on that ride. cycling mecca here.

I really dislike riding with people who constantly piss off the cagers. Especially with the way people are going psychotic in public these days.

People in general seem to despise cyclists and it only takes one nutcase to lose his s-@: and drive his Oldsmobuick through the entire group.

Some meth smoking redneck out in Show Low did that very thing a little while back

My new "mod friendly" approach is to encourage them, give them more rope. I can't say that it works better but seems safer for me.

Without dipping too far in to A&S, there are times when the right thing to do, both legally and in terms of safety, is going to piss off drivers. While intentionally antagonizing drivers isn't a good move for long-term cyclists/drivers relations, neither is kowtowing to their sense of entitlement and reinforcing it by conceding rights that are in place for good reason.
