Well at least you don't have "FOUR" to choose from.

If I'm lucky, someday I will! My husband has already resigned himself to it and capped me at five bikes, which means I still have room in the stable...

Back then, he was up to 20 hours a week at his "triathlon job," from the 10 hours a week he started with.
One wonders, with all the techniques and technologies in place today, what would he have done if he'd started with all that?
You take those genetics, the toughness and mental approach, add in today's "all in" approach, would have been amazing.

You could say that about most of the athletes of the past simply because of the advancements in training methods, nutrition, hydration, support, etc. For an elite level athlete such as yourself, probably worth at least 5 minutes off the marathon leg alone if not more. On the flip side, I don't know that today's athlete is as mentally tough or knows how to win compared to the past. Today's sports and world for that matter, are driven and managed by analytics. It's all about hitting markers and stats. They don't help though when another runner suddenly accelerates and gaps you by 50 yards with 5k left. Those numbers on your watch tells you you're going to crash and burn if you accept the challenge. What do you do then?

Of course, I was referring to other runners/triathletes in the previous post. I don't have to worry about being that mentally seasoned because................I get left behind so fast from the start. The other participants have gone over the horizon and are a distant memory after the 1st mile. I only have to worry about my waving technique as I wave goodbye when the gun sounds. I might get lucky and see them again if it is an out and back course. Otherwise, I'm in a different race altogether.

Here is an old photo of the MV IM ready to go at the gone but not forgotten Naylor's Beach Tri. The wife's Team Miyata is next to it. Also a photo in SOTR and current state. For those not in the know, this is a Japanese market bike originally sold at Hirako Cycles in Yushi, Japan. It has the original shop sticker above the BB. Hirako is still in business today. I bought it off of the Norfolk, VA CL.

I'm guessing that the "Black Dog" is the version of IM that Texas bada$$ Patrick Swayze (RIP) would have ridden, if he had ridden an IM.

So this was interesting and turned up in a group I'm in. Apparently, some Dia Compe hoods fit Suntour GPX levers, well enough for government purposes, at least. (There are a couple of Ironman riders in that group.) As long as you don't look too closely at the front...

I might get lucky and see them again if it is an out and back course. Otherwise, I'm in a different race altogether.
I ran in a 5K last Saturday. I found out a few days before that my wife had signed me up for it. My grandson who is 12 years old said he was also running in it and planned to beat me.
Back story: 2 or 3 weeks before a 1/2 Ironman (oct 27) I had to stop running due to a back issue. Did the 1/2 IM (slowly I might add) then despite my plans of running through the off season, I didn't run again for 4 weeks. The week of the low key Christmas fun run I ran 3 days then found out about 5K and didn't run til 5K.
Now back to fun run (but for me a race). When my son was 14 when he beat me in a 5K but he had to run a 18 something to my 19 something, although early in the race season it still hurt. But he was a teenager. My grandson was intent on beating me and it actually gave me anxiety. He had run 2 miles in 14 something and I was in no shape to run 7 min miles. But this was 3 miles and he had never ran that far. So we warmed up together talked a little trash to each other then lined up. He of course went right to the front of the line and I reluctantly followed, mostly cause I didn't want to lose sight of him. He turned around shook my hand and said let's run together. I said No run your race I don't want to slow you down but I still want to beat you.
The horn goes and we're off and immediately he leaves me behind. I'm running hard and can only hope he slows. Somewhere before the 1 mile marker I notice he's not gaining and in fact I'm catching him. Finally about the 1 mile I do catch him and as I pass him I call out his name. He picks up his pace and runs with me. However almost right after an "old man" passes me. So I decide to run with him and my grandson falls off the pace. The old guy is a strong runner but I think I'm faster so I run immediately in his wake into the headwind. I think at the turn around of the out and back course I'll drop him. We're running hard (for the shape I'm in) and at the turn around he takes water falls back a little and I decide he's done...But Nope. He catches me and starts picking up the pace (hey I was gonna do that). So I tuck in behind him and we're off to the races. Actually I'm running a little behind and to the side. Anyone watching can Clearly see we're in a battle. I think he's in the running club because everyone going towards the turn around are hollering Go Mike! Go Mike! I mean a lot of people, I felt like saying "My Names Not Mike!". Anyways about a half mile to the finish my fitness told on me and I backed off the pace. The funny thing is as I backed off he gained a certain distance and I noticed he wasn't gaining anymore so I thought hey this race ain't over. So I started running harder and thought the last quarter mile I'm gonna go all out. But alas he stayed ahead and finished 20 seconds in front of me.
Fortunately my grandson will have to wait a little longer to beat Me. BTW the old man that beat me was my exact age! He got first and I got 2nd in our age group.
The aftermath: I walked painfully sore for 3 days after. My time was a dismal 24 something HOWEVER that was the best i could do under the circumstances.

Waitaminit.... you're coming off a back issue, running a race you'd only heard about a few days before, finish second in your category, and that's "dismal"? Sounds pretty dang impressive to me.

He’s an over achiever.

The only time I ever placed in a race I was one of three women in my age group. One woman had an air cast on her leg, another was at least sixty weeks pregnant. It was and is my personal record for a 5k, though.

The photo I posted above was my first multisport event. The event was at a campground on the banks of the Rappahannock river. During the swim, the water will get so choppy sometimes that the swimmers will get sick and hurl. So, we opted for the Oly duathlon division. The first run was 2 laps of a big 1 mile square. We start off with 2 in the lead running a pace in the high 5s. There is a group running a 6:30ish pace and another at 7:30ish. Then there's a group of 3 including me, myself, and I at the back at an 8:30ish pace. As I make the first right on the 2nd lap, I look over and the 2 leaders are finishing the 2nd lap. They came in at 11 something. I came in around 18:00. The transition was empty. The rest of the duo participants were already on the bike course. I picked off plenty on the bike portion, including my wife. By the time we get to the 2nd run it was over 80 degrees. I catch an Asian male decked out in his tri suit. We are both in walk/run interval mode by that time. We keep swapping places when the other walks. He finally overheats and sits down under a shade tree to rest. I finish and check the results later. That Asian and I were the only ones in our age group. I placed first, but then got assessed a 3 minute penalty for something. That gave the victory to him. So, I ended up both 2nd in my age group and last place as well. Finished around 24th out of 40 something in the Oly duo division.

Robbie can give you a first hand account of my awesome(lack of) running skills when I "battled" him in his hometown duathlon some years ago.

Once ran a 5-miler. Reebok guy comes over and says "I'm gonna kick your ass." I look him over. "You mean running, right?" Reality startles him.. "uh, yeah." I smile. "OK." My roommate tells him to run along, while he's still able Off he goes. Race was at 7 pm, in July, in NC. Hot. Gun goes off, off we go. He's killing it. We stay sub-5 to the end, he wins , 25:00 to my 25:01. He collapses and they put him in the ambulance. I walk over to him, "Good race. I'm going to get a beer. Mind if I ---- your girlfriend?" Sometimes, the right words just come to me.

I don't think he liked me after that.

Purchase an adult beverage of her choice for your girlfriend?

Buy some flowers for your girlfriend?

Take her out on the town and then end up back at your apartment where we can use your bed as a trampoline while writing on the ceiling with magic markers and therefore cause you to lose your damage deposit?

That last one sounds fun.
