Mid-compact with 11-28 cassette helps portly tri geeks get up hills without burning matches.
Most of us like longer gearing to still apply power on downhills, without spinning high cadence. And most of the successful triathletes don't even exceed 80rpm. And staying on your second-smallest cog is more efficient.
It's also simpler to just slap an 11-28 on all the wheels in the house and not worry about it.

Christmas Eve and New Years Eve are two holidays which involve 36 hours of steady drinking, followed by getting in the car and driving back home. I learned (thankfully in time) to stay off the roads and let them have at it.
