It was weirdly warm in New England today. I went for a short ride with some friends to Arnold Arboretum, where we climbed Peter’s Hill for the view of Boston:

Warm and grey in NYC too. Got two inaugural rides in, first on the 1970 Mk.1 down the Hudson River Greenway. Then an evening grocery run to Trader Joe's on the revamped 1971 International which is now running a Sturmey 8-speed, North Road bars and my venerable B67. Three full bags, no sweat.

Went for a morning run, so just a short ride on the nearby Greenway this afternoon. With 68 degrees this time of year, there's no excuse not to be out there! Every once in while I'm reminded of another reason I left NY.

Today was al sounseasonably warm but sunny. I wanted to have another go on the Mk.1 but it's clear that the non-drive BB threading is compromised. VO threadless is on the way. Instead, I pulled the panniers off the International and put it into Coffeneuring mode for a run north to the Little Red Lighthouse on the Hudson River and back down to Plowshares Coffee, my neighborhood roaster on Broadway for a Cortado. I tweaked the saddle position and the 89 8-speed hub and now it's pretty much dialed in.

Like most of the other East coasters, glorious weather here in Virginia. High 60’s, blue skies and sunshine. I took “Chuck” out for 36 miles. Fair amount of wind out but I had tailwind for the critical portions and I detoured onto some dirt road and chose a steepish climb in lieu of slogging miles into a headwind.

Western Albemarle County. First 2 pics are Simmons Gap Rd, base of the climb up to Mission Home. Last pic is Blackwell Hollow Rd. Skyline Drive is up behind that line of hills. Last pic does look like the roads in Bedford County near Lynchburg. I used to live down that way.

Nice I had a crash pad in vinton right outside of roanoke, The house, backed up to the blue ridge parkway, one of the pictures reminded me of that.

We are at our weekend house. We took a ten-mile ride and stopped at the food coop near home. No pictures of the ride, but here's my bike. I recently put on a new triple crankset, and it's fantastic. The front shifting is improved, and I could swear that so is the rear somehow. I now have tons of low gears.

No dramatic clouds or scenery, just a 44 mile run down PCH, Camarillo to Malibu on the '73 Super Course. My friend Rick showed up on his DeRosa, and we showed the modern carbon riders how it was back in the day. 41° at the start, low 60s finish. Great day on the bike. 12 days in a row for me, all of 2020 so far, and today my legs were barking at me near the end.

My good friend and I enjoyed a spin around White Rock Lake this afternoon in low 50's sunny temps.

I was at the weekend home today. One of our heating systems is a wood pellet burning stove. I rode to the hardware store and picked up some tools and supplies and also two 40-pound bags of pellets. Funny, almost as if on queue, a redneck-looking guy saw my bike and said, "you won't be hauling much with that." I told him what I was getting. I think that's pretty good. It may seem odd to tow a heavy load with a racing bike, but it works great. And I now have lots of low gears, so it was a bit like driving a truck, shifting madly at every gradient change.

Less than a year ago my wife and I moved 12 miles west from Lagunitas, California to Point Reyes Station. Let's take a quick bicycle tour of our town. It's a very small town so it won't take long.




We are surrounded by range land and park lands, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Tomales Bay State Park. This is the view into the dairy pastures at the end of my street.




This is the view coming into town from the east. In the mist at the end of the road is the Olema Marsh where we will go next.




The Olema Marsh and the old Giacomini dairy barn are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Some nice little dirt paths wander through the area which is popular with the bird watchers.







From farther out along a path at the edge of the marsh is this view back towards town.

Point Reyes Station part 2

This town, like many in California, was originally established as a railroad terminal for lumber and produce that was shipped to San Francisco to build and feed that booming city. Now the trains are long gone and our biggest economic contributions come from tourism and agriculture.




The galleries, boutiques, inns, and restaurants live side by side with the hardware store, feed store, barber shop and auto repair.




Did I mention galleries? We are a very artsy town.













And yes, we have a bike shop!
