Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Woohoo!!! I've been pain free every since.

Yesterday I had an appointment with a neurologist, a headache specialist. What a pleasant woman, with reassuring information. My condition is called Primary Stabbing Headache and my symptoms fit the profile to a tee. It's relatively uncommon in the general medical world but very familiar to headache specialists. It has been known to be worse in some cases but my experience was within the range of "typical". There's no known malignant cause for them and it doesn't pose any other dangers so we're just going to do an MRI to cover that base, and she gave me some stronger meds for the next time they return. I've had these stabbing headaches before, for many many years, but they've never been anywhere near so severe or relentless, usually lasting less than 24 hours and always going away without treatment. Usually once or twice a year at most. But not this time. Why, who knows?

But all in all it was very comforting to speak with a doctor who's clearly very bright and willing to spend enough time with you to hear your story, instead of feeling rushed to get out of an office so they can see the next patient. Almost makes you tear up. :sniffle:

I'm happy!

Thanks to to all you lugs for your concern and support.
So they're suuuuuure nothing's wrong with your head?

In all seriousness, glad to hear you're in the clear and thanks for the follow-up!

I don't really know what you're asking. Brake question?

First upgrade(s) will probably be crankset, wheels, etc. I bought this very reasonably. It's a 2017 Garneau Steeple X with virtually no miles. Not a high-end machine but rides pretty nice.

My old (first) boss, who's now off in a different department, just messaged me that her most trusted unofficial source says that the current plan is to not bother giving everyone the "relocation or severance" choice. That seems good, but of course it also just makes the house buying process murkier.

Just read the incident report from an accident back in October. 20 Y.O. wearing headphones was walking on the tracks of a busy main line when he was struck from behind, run over, and killed. Says his face was "distorted" from impact trauma. It was later determined that he on the phone with his mom when he was struck. She probably heard the horn. He obviously did not.

Sad.

Oh, no, nothing like that. They're far too paranoid about lawsuits to do that; they wouldn't even do that to a former (different) boss who was fired for cause. The new rumor would mean they allow those of us working remotely to just continue, remotely, and ignore the situation as they have been for the past years and just let natural attrition take care of it, at least for a while. So that would mean I'm in the clear, until the next time I'm not, with no idea of how to plan life.

Here's an unusual one near Chattanooga this morning: a guy was killed at this intersection, but he was not in the truck when the train hit it. Details of his whereabouts not given.

What are the railroad liability rules when the crossing bars are not down?

Did you get a good buy?

BTW all my water bottle cages are metal. A few are cheap Al, most are King SS, and I think I have one weight weenie Ti.

Yup, those'd be posts. Unfortunately, it limits you to post-mount calipers (if you have a flat-mount frame, you can use either flat-mount calipers or adapted post-mounts) and Shimano seems to have chosen flat-mount as their default caliper style (all of the current hydro groups are flat).

You can still go Shimano by buying levers and calipers separately, but the pricing might not be as attractive.

OK, I see that I have a lot of learning to do. In the meantime, these Shimano mechanicals and 5800 levers/shifters stop fine.
