It depends on what you mean by "GC". If you mean GC in grand tours, it's hard to imagine that anybody could lead a WT team for a 3 week stage race without having ridden that kind of race before as a domestique. Not that I'm any kind of expert, but I don't think people can get ready for that kind of challenge by doing 1 week stage races at a lower level.
The world is his oyster, but I think if he aspires to make his mark on the WT, he needs to ride at the WT level as an apprentice before he leads. But I admit, I'm no expert and I do know that the WT chews people up and demoralizes them if they get in the wrong situation.

Like Froome, who was cultivated years before, and many lbs heavier that his TdF debut, the GC thing I think can be recognized early.

8th in GC after today. A strong opening TT helped, but he was up there with the big boys today. It's a long race for a kid, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

It would be great to see him stay in the top 10. Is UAE hoping to have a GC contender that they will protect in this race? Or are they there mostly for stage wins?

Good to see another young American displaying some promise. Note that very few of them live up to the highest expectations. It's a rough sport.
Tejay used to participate in the Road Forum here from his cat 3 - 2 - 1 days, and when he hit the scene he had a ton of momentum and so many thought he'd be the next American great. Don't get me wrong, he's a great talent for certain, but I think a lot of us had visions of him being a perennial podium contender in the Grand Tours. Similar expectation with Craddock and Stetina. Let's not put too much pressure on our young with massive expectations. Hoping to see him racing for as long as he chooses to, and hoping he has success.

feel he may have gotten a little miscast/overused early on. not that he didn't command respect but a reminder after his ride in the 2019 tdf stage seven (broke his hand waay early
on in the stage and finished the looong stage) showed how brutal this sport can be and renewed my respect for his dedication/efforts.
hoping brandon can finish in the top twenty and give the other teams more to worry about in the future,

He gave us some good moments in the Giro, but today on stage 18, he folded.
I look forward to his performance on the final time trial, but he's out of GC contention for sure and I don't expect to see him as a significant grand tour GC threat going forward. Probably his future is as a TT specialist and as a strong domestique. But I wonder if he could develop into a classics riderr?
