An off topic question on D.V.D. players.

.Anyone happen to know if there is a strong electromagnet in portable D.V.D. players?
Mine is a small seven inch L.C.D. screen portable player.
when I hold it in my hand it sure feels like there is some kind of a strong force inside.
I am just asking for shiggles but it does interest me.

No. What you are feeling is the gyroscopic force of the platter spinning which resists movement. Get a bike wheel, hold it in one hand on the axle and spin it and then try move it around and you'll feel a similar force. On a side note (and to bring it back to cycling) this is not why a bicycle stays upright. They stay upright because you subtly steer the front wheel to counter the fall and you do this without even thinking about it.

And are you saying you can feel electromagnetic forces? What's the trick for that?

I am sure that there are some magnets in there, electric motors need them. But CDs and DVDs are optical, they use lasers, not magnets like tape placers and cassette players that preceded them.

May the force be with you.

No I feel the result of them. And even that has been brought into question with the statement I just feel the disk spinning mechanism. The close I have come to feeling electromagnetism was when using a demagnetising wand. And of course I only felt their effect. Science isn't about who is right. It is about the curiosity to find out.

an older player might have some decent size motors, but newer ones have very small motors. No need for a lot of torque.

On most home CD and DVD players there is a low power magnetic clamp that lifts and holds the disc above the tray. Unsure if a portable DVD player has the same thing. But those discs are spinning between 600 and 1600 rpm. Maybe more if your portable has a buffer memory.

Thanks that helps clear things up even more.
What about the L.C.D. screen itself?

Metaphors be with you.

Now that is incredibly interesting.
So when spinning the disk is elevated and doesn't touch the player.

You feel something. You are hypothesizing it's due to magnets.
