Things happen sometimes but probably not a good idea to not follow instructions from an officer and then resist arrest on top of that. Bad things can and will happen to you.

Yep, that's right. in the presence of cop overlords you are to become a limp rag doll and do absolutely everything they say. It doesn't matter if the cop is a 90 IQ powertripping moron; do as he says. Cops follow laws, they aren't paid to think.
It's a good thing that rider wasn't in the USA. He'd have been tased, trussed up, framed and thrown in a supermax for 10 years.

"The park authorities responded that a cyclist had suffered a broken arm but said that the rider had entered the park without paying.
When he was stopped by rangers and asked to show a ticket or permit “the situation spiraled,” causing the suspect to injure himself during the ordeal."
He threw himself on the ground! His arm was broken when he got here!! -- South African Park Ranger, probably.

I'd say it's the ol' "three sides to every story" thing...

Were they police, or park rangers, or what? Should you always be required to react like a grateful peasant living in a military dictatorship whenever any toilet attendant in a uniform with epaulettes demands that you comply to some arbitrary demand?

This is a real stupid one, if you have to pay to get in then the park police should have the right to prove you've paid to get in and showing them the ticket should end the whole issue. Escalating a failure to pay to a broken arm is so excessive that the people involved deserve to be fired. Though what's with charging a cyclist to enter a park? NYS parks you can just ride on in and no worries, seems that way at any town or county park I've ridden into as well.

What the story failed to mention was whether or not he had actually paid admission (or had some kind of season pass).
Did the cyclist try to skip the entry fee, then BS his way out of the ticket? Or were the rangers hassling someone that was legally there?
Tickets usually aren't on the top of my mind once I've paid and passed through the gate.
In the Twitter image, it looks like the guy is being lifted clean off the ground.

I didn't go to this link. I watched the footage a fellow cyclist recorded that you can find on the VeloNews website and read what he had to say. He said that when they pinned his arm back (and probably when they did the lifting in the photo above but that is my speculation) he heard a very audible snap and the arm immediately went to an unnatural angle. I'm also guessing that photo was lifted from that cyclist's video.
Breaking someone's arm for riding into a park without paying? That doesn't qualify as excessive force?
Ben

A few months ago I rode around Crater Lake. I parked the car on the far side of the entry booth, which was un-manned (we got there early). I had a National Park Pass that I left in the car on display, but I had no proof with me that I had paid. I have no idea what the circumstances were in this case in South Africa, but I do know that cycling into a state park in CA is free, and in many national parks they are fairly casual about fees if you don't drive in.

I believe it is, however, free for certain hikers.
When I was there a couple of years ago for the "Ride the Rim", they had a long line of cars waiting. They eventually opened two ticket booths, but only had bike tickets at one of the booths. They would have waved me through, but I wanted to pay for admission since I was overnighting.

Two things that aren’t allowed in regular threads here are politics and guns. If you want the thread to remain in Professional Cycling, leave politics out. Otherwise it gets moved to P&R
